Leandro Trossard (19)

Yeah 14 league goals, 4 in the Champions League and the deflected goal in the community shield last year

True. And welcome to the community, mate.

What more does Trossard have to do to convince Arteta to start him instead of Martinelli?

Martinelli in my view is a better player than Trossard, his pace, his technical ability etc. Trossard became accustomed to starting games at the back end of last season, thus the rather undignified sulking.
For me Martinelli for the short-medium term might be better as an impact substitute. But it’s not just his fault, he’s far too isolated because too much of our play goes onto the right channel and hopefully someone like Merino can allow us to adapt that.

I mean he did fine after but let’s be real the hype this week is coming from him scoring with his first touch which could’ve happened to anyone.

Right place right time, wasn’t like he came on and was electric creating 10 chances.

I don’t get why there’s a big fuss over it online, he likely starts the next game but martinelli has been our #1 on the left so no surprise he started the first two games.

Well said, hopefully merino brings back some of the qualities Chala had that helped make martinelli so good in 22/23.

Trossard has a case though. He ended last season in real form and has been good in pre season.

Scored,
ran onto the lofted ball to create the Partey goal
and then he touched a pass to Rice when Odegaard missed a brilliant chance.

Trossard was part of all our chances after he came on.

Ok

martinelli ‘touched a pass’ to partey to set up his shot in the first half that went just over
he made a good run and pulled it across to havertz who tapped wide, probably our closest effort before half time.

So he scored by luck?

@Leper :upside_down_face:

Got to be the luckiest player ever to keep being in the right place at the right time to score a series of crucial goals for us.

ah I see the old ‘lets make my own narrative and pretend someone else said it’ lol

if it wasnt skill to be in a good position then I wouldn’t have bothered to mention the right place right time bit, but you know that and are obviously just bored trying to start a pointless issue.

Definitely agree that Trossard isn’t overly creative. Can’t disagree that he gets crucial goals and I love him for it but I do think the aforementioned creativity element is a key reason he has that super sub role.

Problem is that Martinelli hasn’t been either. Only thing he has been creative in is finding ways to screw up with final actions.

Well let’s keep it factual - Trossard has produced this season and Martinelli hasn’t.

It’s as simple as he’s the B player. Martinelli is the A player and when he’s off form (nothing special first 2 games) or when it suits the opponent then the B player will come in.

Trossard should now start for both reasons against Brighton. However, if we do sign another LW better than Martinelli then they will be the A player and Trossard will be back to the bench. For the same reason I’d expect it to be Martinelli sold next summer if we sign a Williams or such.

He’s great and the job he did to fill the gap last season was unbelievable but its just his role in the squad.

Correct, well done.

I think Trossard’s performance from second half of last season showed he could be a starter.

At the moment it’s a pretty even competition for the starting place, like either player could start but Martinelli’s got work to do to keep it that way.
