All it took was dropping out of the top four, being overtaken by all your rivals, losing to relegation teams, watching players you have persisted with every season under performing, and your best player clamouring for the the exit door, as well as being ridiculed by the media, pundits, supporters, ex players, etc, to persuade him that maybe he wasn’t quite on the right track and that he could do a bit more.

Jonas Hector plays for Germany because there is no competition for left back.
It is not quite fair to “write him off” by just saying Germany CANNOT find a better left back than Hector.
He is a very solid for NT, and already played 35 games and scored 3 goals for them.
Maybe Joachim Low did see something special in him and chose him over Marcel Schmelzer and Marco Durm.
