A new contract should not be seriously offered but neither should we accept such a poverty bid. Roma paid 11.5m euro for a 33-year-old mediocre GK from Wolves, they can certainly pay more than 12+3 for Xhaka.
They did the same thing with Chris Smalling last summer, low balling United for months until finally paying up right at the end of the window.
This is actually a great comparison. Smalling was their top target back then as well IIRC. Man Utd wanted to sell, Smalling wanted to go, but Roma were penny pinching.
Same now as well, Mourinho’s top target, agreed personal terms and he even accepted a pay cut yet they’re still penny pinching.

A new contract makes no sense. I’d understand forcing him to stay another year if we really can’t find a good replacement this summer, but that’s no reason to commit to even more years and a salary that’ll make him that bit harder to shift in future.
