I get that you disagree, youāve made that point very clear, but Iāve also been very clear that both the fine and any prison sentence would be determined by the Court, and any prison sentence would be based on sentencing criteria and previous convictions would be taken into account. I think thatās a pretty fair answer to your question.
Not when in the very recent past youāve been quick to put a figure on a fine for an imaginary crime but now you suddenly need to wait and see what a court says for a real crime.
You say the punishment needs to fit the crime but then canāt say what punishment fits this crime which then suggests you donāt actually know how much of a crime this offence youāre wailing about so much is.
I think I suggested a figure for the fine after your persisted with your line of questioning. You are fully aware that my justification for suggesting that voting should be compulsory was not to hand out fines to the population, but to improve the turnout at elections, alongside a whole number of other suggestions to improve our democracy.
The punishment needs to fit the crimeā¦and as I reference above (as highlighted below), this is the crime and this is the punishment.
Nice try on the obfuscation but no, you werenāt pushed into naming a figure. I asked you what you would do with people who still didnāt vote if it was compulsory. This was your immediate response:
General election thread, 26th May if you want to check for yourself.
As for this issue, your answer is a cop out, and you know it.
The point Iām making is that youāre persistent! And you attack if I come up with a figure and if I donāt so whatās the point?
In respect of voting, the fine only becomes an issue for people who canāt be bothered to vote. I have accepted and come round to the idea that maybe the fine can be tokenistic, based on Australiaās experience, but youāre still missing the point that the focus of the suggestion is not about fines!
As for Stonehenge it is not a cop out to say that a fine, or prison sentence, or both is the consequence of the actions and that I hope that the two individuals responsible are suitably punished.
Jesus Christ, 550 dead is a fucking huge number. I mean, maybe not in proportion to the millions who do the hajj each year, but still⦠feels like something has gone very wrong.
