Visited BBC site for the first time this week, and I didn’t realise how far this eulogising had gone.

Seems to me to be a thoroughly dislikable person whose only redeeming quality was that he opposed Putin.

Remember the US allowed the Pakistani Navalny to be jailed and banned for elections because he didn’t want to build guns for Ukraine.

Democracy only for whites, dictatorships for uppity browns looking after their own interests.

Navalny is worth eulogising despite his policy positions. It alot more palatable to be an ethnonationalist within a democratic framework rather than a dictatorship.

What he stood and died for in promoting democracy and anti-corruption is alot more important and significant than his views or policy positions.

So if an ethnonationalist, who has on the record called Georgians rodents, Muslims from Central Asia undesirables, who basically was a rampant racist, fulfills his imperialist dreams of invading its neighbours, then the invasion is justified? Because he “promotes democracy”?

Sorry, I don’t really understand this reasoning.

I know he sort of mellowed down his positions a bit, probably to appease western support he has got. But as Jakey mentioned and the parts I quoted, even until the latter years, he made outrageous claims and statements on those topics.

I think there are better candidates to support for western governments. More liberal ones.

As for the democracy he promoted. We would only have to wait and see how much of this democracy he fought for would be established if he had managed to acquire power.

Having said that, it still sucks to see him being treated the way he was treated for dissenting and challenging Putin’s power. All in all he is a very strange pick to swoon over from a western point of view.

Navalny is like the backup QB The player on the bench that gets better the longer he doesn’t play, and everyone is crying out for.

Turns out he’s just as much of a cunt if given the opportunity.

Well part of it is a broad majority of Russians already share the same reasoning and support policies reflected above.

I think alot of people don’t really understand that Russia is a very socially conservative right wing country. There won’t be any credible anti putin political platform with “moderate” western ideals or policies at its forefront.

It is hoped, that in a democratic framework where people have the right to protest, vote freely and journalists can report freely the Russians will naturally moderate and make better informed decisions.

So Navalny having ethnonationalist views is not surprising, should it be disqualifying of western support? imo, no

It would be negligent of the West to ignore or minimise Navalny’s impact in opposing Putin’s autocratic regime for a democratic model. The comdenation of Putin needs to be widespread and loud, the next Navalny needs to know they’ll have Western support if they want free and fair elections.

I think this idea is pretty naive. Someone with such strong ethnonationalist and racist views, I doubt would be exemplary in upholding a democratic framework. Wouldn’t this person do everything in his power so a kinder politician wouldn’t stand a chance?

In terms of geopolitical ambitions, he wasn’t much less of an imperialist than Putin is.

It’s an interesting case.

This seems like a pretty big assumption? What evidence is there to support it? Because he held ethnonationalist views? That’s not evidence he seek to be an autocrat like Putin if he ever got close to executive power. Seems unlikely a guy who dedicated his life to opposing Putin and being anti corruption would adopt his method of autocracy.

I don’t really get what is “naive” either, Western governments support Navalny because he stood in peaceful opposition to Putin, ultimately at the cost of his own life. He is someone who was leading critic of the war in Ukraine, it’s important that dissidence to the war come from native Russians.

His treatment and subsequent murder should be an affront to anybody who cares about peaceful protest, freedom of expression or democracy, that’s worth western leaders eulogising regardless of his views or past positions. That’s not hard to understand

To be silence or muted about Navalny’s murder is cowardice and gives cover to Putin’s actions. Sure contradictions with western values exist but they’re not really important in the grand scheme of things

What a surprise.

Instead of actually making something or doing something cool.

Just jack the price up on essentials. Easy money, because nobody will stop you. Bleed the middle class dry.

And then when they fall off the perch, keep them on benefits so they can give that money back to you and their fat cat mates.

Fuck the UK and fuck the government and their lack of regulators.

I’ll add that there’s no such think as a middle-class.

You’re either working class or upper class

Meanwhile, in the US…

Concurring with the majority opinion, Chief Justice Tom Parker wrote: “Even before birth, all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory.”

Anyone wanking in Alabama should be charged with mass atrocities and crimes against humanity.

They need a special task force to take down any active or potential wankers. Call it Wank Force.

It’s only right.
