Ehh. Corbyn had a blind spot imo when it came to antisemitism, not saying he’s a brownshirt bigot but he definitely could use some education on the issue and how to handle it better. But even he would know not to meet with Viktor fucking Orban!
Does England have a reason to have cozy diplomatic relations with Hungary? Boris could always send some underling to meet with one of Orban’s people instead, right?
It doesn’t really matter what state relations are like between our countries tbh. Purpose of visits is to establish a personable relationship between the leaders, that visit isn’t a endorsement of their leadership or policy.
Why do we make a have such a formal setup for any foreign leader visiting? It’s mostly for show and there isn’t going to be any detailed discussion. It’s about formal diplomacy and reciprocity really, even if you have major differences.
You need to create a basis for discussion between two countries in order to address issues
Usually, these “personable relationship” visits are just to eye one another up and see if the other guy is a big a cunt as themself. Evens itself out in the long run. JMHO, you understand.
There’s that US academic who just got fired because of some pro-Palestine tweets when she was an under grad, because of relentless pressure from the right in the US.
The double standards, and wilful blindness, is astonishing.
But we’ve always known that this whole “cancel culture” stuff is very disingenuous. Unfortunately we seem to have allowed the right to totally monopolise the issue. Can’t even be mad at them, thats our failing.
Maybe I follow accounts that are hyperfocused on the Jewish community because there’s always a big kerfuffle about what Boris is or isn’t doing, the same with Corbyn.
Idk how many people know who Viktor Orban is which probably makes your whole point. They probably think he’s Willie Orban’s younger brother and a hot winger prospect for Leipzig’s under 23s.
Edit: goddamnit the joke to say “right winger prospect” was so obvious and I missed it. Fml. Gervinho-esque miss on my part.
Of course, I can’t speak to the accounts you follow on twitter, but I can say with certainty that Johnson gets nothing like the same scrutiny Corbyn got/gets when it comes to this issue in the UK. It’s genuinely not even remotely comparable.
The media did a hit job on Corbyn from Day 1 mate, everyone in power wanted to see his demise. All the big corporations, the media and even most of his own party. Corbyn essentially was always a campaigner for whatever cause he felt was just. He pretty much pissed his political career away by voting against his own party on things like Iraq.
The smears of anti-semitism are because he’s campaigned for a long time for Palestinian rights. By association of doing so he became associated with some anti-semitic Palestinian campaigners. Many of left winger supporters within momentum, the social media creation which elected him, have said unfortunate anti-semitic things while campaigning for Palestinian rights. This has been put under the spot light, where as it wouldn’t be if it was a corporate politician.
Also some Jewish people in the Labour party who played the anti-semitism card did so because momentum were stopping their right wing policies. Luciana Berger comes to mind.
Don’t forget the media in your own country has labelled a Jewish socialist in Bernie Sanders as being anti-semitic. Which is a complete nonsense
This atrocity is just the tip of the iceberg. Trudeu is already framing it as a past transgressions rather than part of a program of systemic extermination that persists until this day.
Western governments probably know about and cover up dozens and dozens of similar stories, only shedding light on them when they can claim they’ve moved on from their shameful past.
Word is that Bibi Netanyahu may be removed from power based on a new coalition government. I think they have a week to cobble it together. Crucially, the ultra Orthodox party would not be in the coalition.
Naftali Bennet and Yair Lapid are the two mooted heads of the coalition. IIRC Bennet came from a right wing party and Lapid at one point tried to cast himself as a centrist. It’s not like there’s been a left wing victory and the Joint List has swept in to power ready to end the Occupation. But it removes Bibi from power and that’s so important imo. The guy is a war criminal and a regular criminal. He’s done so much damage to the Jewish community by deliberately conflating Judaism with Zionism with Israeli citizenship. Being rid of him is a good thing.
