Yikes

Something very rotten about Macron and his government.

When you’re making Le Pen sound like a reasonable moderate you’re in trouble lol.

Shatters the myth some have on twitter about the EU being led by Liberal governments!

What a joke debate, that’s if we can call it one, it was more of a pub conversation between two people who share the same ideas and present them differently, all the numbers presented during that conversation need fact checking.

Concerning. Do they have any proposals or is it just populist rhetoric?

Are massive waiting lists a thing within the NHS?

This is essentially 1 in 5 of the Irish population waiting to see a consultant or for an operation/procedure/scan and the lists have been over the half million mark as long as I can remember. There was a story during the week about someone who got an MRI appointment for 2024! Madness.

Yeah, think my partner waited roughly 9 months for her kidney operation (third kidney wtf) and 6 months for nasal surgery. Pretty sure people wait years for things like hip surgeries etc.

They cancelled tons of surgeries etc due to focusing on Covid treatment. And we run our NHS at breaking at the best of times. Loads of people have had managable conditions turn fatal because of it.

Curious to hear about that one

She kept getting ill, they found a smaller third kidney pretty much back washing all the shit they filter out back into the system. Didn’t discover this until she was like 21 I think.

Sorry to hear that mate, hopefully she’s fully cured now

This is the kind of double standards, that led to things like the rise of trump, far right groups and brexit. It also brings the censorship thing into question again, either all kinds of hate speech should be banned or let all of the idiots say what they want, and let all of us laugh at them.

If a white person was to say this about any other race. Not only would they be banned permanently from Twitter, they would be hounded in the media, and sacked from their job. But this woman who is patently racist, receives support and gets a promotion to a full professorship at Cambridge University.

She sounds like a twat.

Her defence of it:

On 23 June 2020, Gopal [tweeted] “White lives don’t matter. As white lives” and “Abolish whiteness”, in response to a banner flown over a Premier Leaguefootball stadium that read “White lives matter Burnley”. She received abusive messages, including death threats, following her tweet.

Gopal told the media that her comments were opposing the concept of whiteness – the presumption of white superiority – and challenging the racial basis for lives mattering, adding that it wasn’t whiteness that gave lives their dignity, nor should it be the criteria for lives mattering. Professor Gopal stood by her tweets asserting that her comments were “very clearly speaking to a structure and ideology, not about people”.

Not to be pedantic, but couldn’t she have said that. I know it’s a bit more wordy, but she should have no problem with that. Being a professor. At Cambridge, no less.

The issue isn’t what she said, if we believe in free speech then she can say whatever she wants (Even though I don’t agree with her reasoning, but whatever) To me it is still racist, . It’s the treatment after. She wasn’t banned permanently, got a job promotion and heralded.

If a white person was ever to say anything even remotely similar the treatment would one hundred percent be different.

Professor Peterson was uninvited to speak at this same Cambridge university, for refusing to let Canadian law dictate what pronouns he was allowed to use. Worse than that he has been labelled as an alt right racist, transphobic, anti woman etc… and faced all kinds of abuse to him and his family, because he’s white.

Twitter is not a place for nuanced discussion. More often than not it’s where people express their lowest, most base impulses. There’s a reason reptiles like Trump are the loudest voices on that platform.

I get her argument and agree to some extent but she didn’t do herself any favors in her initial tweet. Either she was trying to engage on the same level as the Burnley fans by being intentionally provocative or she’s simply as illiterate and unable to communicate as they are.

If it’s the first she’s fighting a losing battle. Anyone spouting “white lives matter” is not interested understanding the socio-political implications of white supremacy. Their pea sized intellects go as far as “white supremacy good, me like…SJW baaaad me no like :bellerin: “

The question of whether Cambridge should have re-instated her or whether Twitter should have unlocked her account is a moot point that people leaning right will point to as either evidence of leftist favoritism or the reason for the rise of fascists, which is laughable. “White lives matter” is founded on the same double standard, whataboutism that attempts to render legitimate critiques of white supremacy inert. It’s also a good example of how white supremacists will use anything to further white supremacy—“The Proud Boys can’t be racist, their leader is a person of color”…“Black lives matter? But what about white lives!?”

The primary concern for institutions like Twitter or Cambridge is their own existence before even considering any high principled stance. If that means allowing a pile of crap like Trump or an ignorant professor to continue on their platform they’ll do it.

That would of been received better but does it fit in the character limit?

Her job title is Postcolonial Studies and much of her focus seems to be on racism and pointing out white supremacy where she thinks she sees it. And she looks for it everywhere in both a current and historic context. Essentially she’s a professional SJW. You know she’s going to come out and deconstruct and hit back at the ‘white lives matter’, which she believes trivialises white supremacy.

Jordan Peterson would of been deplatformed by student protest, not the university itself. I like some of his analysis but he goes down some ridiculous rabbit holes… He has said some off colour remarks about the Nazis. He likened ethnical cleansing to some positive personality traits. He also said ‘you have to admire Hitler’
