Gabriel Jesus (9)

Great defensive work all game yet again.

Lovely skill to win the all important penalty at 0-0.

Love having him fit and part of the squad

Just got to hope it hits for him eventually, his movement is top notch.

I thought he had a good game tbh. A little scoring run starting midweek would be lovely now but he’s a nuisance and the type of player that makes things happen even if he’s not at the end of them.

Is that enough for what we’re doing here…i dunno but i wouldn’t be getting rid personally.

You all know how things change in life… seasons come and go… your views change as time goes by.

For me, it seemed like it was only yesterday, when the Die Hard jokes in the Havertz thread reached lows I haven’t seen on here in a while… it was decidedly the worst thread on OA.

But waking up one morning, this morning specifically, and reading the few dozen unread posts I had left behind in this thread, I realised, that things had changed.

This is now the worst thread on OA.

Not sure what direction my life will be heading from here, but I haven’t read the Zinchenko thread in a while… thinking about going there next. Wish me luck.

Thank you for listening.

You are right but also maybe wrong!

Jesus is a brilliant footballer. Like brilliant. It is fair to suggest that the ā€˜Joga Bonita’ has stopped somewhat and he doesn’t look the goal threat we need him to be either.

I think he’s our best forward but he shouldn’t be starting at the minute. Havertz is our no.9, Saka is performing at least in output and Martinelli and Trossard are bigger goal threats.

Such a lovely player. We are lucky to have him. He is the most skillful player in the team and is a nightmare to defend. Works extremely hard without the ball and is physically very very strong.

I’m rewatching the game since I didn’t watch it all the way through the first time.

As much as Jesus is profligate in front of goal, for the time he was on he absolutely tormented their fullbacks and wingers. His hold up play on the wing really nullifies any potential counter attack from Brighton.

He’s a very good versatile attacking player but too unreliable to be a first team regular.
So we could sell Nketiah, Nelson and ESR then buy Watkins and use Jesus as a squad player.

Question remains whether Watkins is of the required standard for us moving forward. He’s better than Nketiah but is he the Haaland, Kane level striker we need?

He’s prem proven and I like him allot but we may need a different profile and quality of player. He’s also 28ish right?

I think the team needs a top dribbler with good speed that could take on the defense by himself, expecially one on one in tight space, and create the shooting chance for his teammates.

So like a Jesus that can actually score :arteta:

More like a Man City Leroy Sane type, not Jesus.

Jesus does not have that speed, and not decisive.

Watkins is at his peak so would hit the ground running because he’s already at a decent PL club but he’s not as young as most of the rest of our squad.

It depends if Arteta wants proven PL quality or a younger striker with potential.
If he was genuinely interested in Toney, who is a similar age, perhaps Watkins might be a better alternative.

The performances Jesus put in for us pre-World Cup were absolutely game-changing, level raising, title winning quality. He was utterly phenomenal. Yes, he was a transformational signing.

His dribbling skill was absolutely elite level. Busting up defensive shapes with his ridiculous spontaneity.

If we could get back that version of Jesus then we would be laughing right now. He hasn’t been at 100% condition. There’s clear reasons for his reduced impact. The fact he is now a rotation option shows our level these days.

Not in a million years should we consider selling him. His versatility, technical level, tactical understanding and outstanding work ethic make him a really, really rare attacker.

The disrespect in this thread is quite frankly baffling. Nobody on our team has a fraction of what he has dribbling wise. He is elite.

That’s a real shame I hope he can get this sorted soon.

Maybe during this preseason.

Fucking Brazil

I like Jesus, I can see his value but the fact he’s a bench player now says a lot. He simply does not start when Martinelli is 100%.

I start to cringe when people start hyping up donkey work when it’s the basic requirement of being in the side. He simply needs to score more once given opportunities, I hope he can get back to his level.

The persistent injuries and lack of production are valid critiques. We’ve gone large portions of the season without him and haven’t missed a beat. He’s clearly not an essential player to this side or an untouchable. Pointing that out isn’t hate

I appreciate your defense of Jesus.

And I thank you for it.

It was the same with white earlier though.

Jesus is top class and I hope he can get over this patchy form and injury play
