I have never before heard the word “intent” even slightly associated with offside. What a load of bollocks.
Everton had enough time to organise their defence then, didn’t they?!
I’ll be counting the seconds for other teams corners and awaiting similar tweets.
While I see what you mean, we did do that repeatedly yesterday to the point where I think we were being deliberate about it. Maybe to wind up the defenders or mess with their concentration or something.
It absolutely had some intent, but if the average corner last season took 33 seconds and we were taking less time than that, then pundits, et al should not now be creating headlines implying extraordinary time wasting
Nah. Completely fair game to commentate on a clear and deliberate tactic. No issue at all.
Fair enough but it’s bollocks and only goes onto serve a talking point, which won’t be put forth in a positive light.
In my view the player blocking the pass attempts to block it by sticking out his leg. He is not unknowingly getting hit by the ball and deflecting it towards Nketiah. The goal 100% should have stood.
I look forward to the VAR comms this week. I don’t think they have looked at it like this because that decision (is it deliberate by the attacker or not?) should be up to the ref and not the VAR.
I just don’t understand why they take the decision completely out of the hands of man on the field in situations like this.
Ultimately he’s in charge except for these invented scenarios where he is not.
Yeah, ultimately, according to the letter of the law, it was the correct decision. But my favourite line from Dale Johnson’s piece on it is:
It’s the return of the “deliberate play” aspect of the law which created a unique offside situation, the likes of which we may not see again.
Of course we won’t see it again, just like other bizarre decisions that only seem to go against us
I am trying to remember noticing something as clear as that one where someone was making a specific pass, it deflects/hits an opposing player and it travels that far to an offside player…
There is also a fine line between “deflected pass by one team” to “redirected”, in which case it might be handled differently. Either way, I couldn’t remember how the rule worked, so it was an interesting case to be reminded on.
Just like the two yellows for one passage of play and forgetting to draw the VAR lines. Arsenal are always involved when things are unique.
I want to know who sat watching PL football last season to calculate the average time taken for corner deliveries. How do you have that stat readily available?
I would imagine in this era of stats, they have a statistic recorded for any actions within games. Also when they are specifically recording time for ball in play vs not, it makes sense that times are recorded for corners/free kicks/penalties/goal kicks
Why on earth does it matter if a defenders touch was deliberate?
I think that it is the new rule
I was more questioning why that is a rule
Yeah it makes little to no sense, but here we are…
Maybe I’m losing my mind but I swear we had a goal scored against us where there was a deflection off one of our defenders. I just don’t understand how an official can say that a touch is not deliberate unless the ball smashes into my face and bounces into the path of an attacker.
That’s exactly how I feel. He attempts to block Gabriels pass, so he deliberately plays the ball. Sure, he didn’t mean for it to go to Nketiah, but that shouldn’t matter.
