Ethan Nwaneri (22)

Probably because he’s not getting that same treatment yet.

Stick one of them on each wing, they won’t know who to double up on

Maybe not to the extent that Saka gets double-teamed, but that wasn’t my point. The fact is, when it does happen, no one talks about it.

Let me see why Ethan is not getting as hyped as Yamal. It might have to do something with Yamal winning the Euro and being the one of the best player of the tournament. Unlike Ethan, he has played quite a lot of games.

Might be down to the fact that he’s only just now getting more consistent game time in non cup games.

Yup

:eyes:

Difference is Nwaneri is much better equipped to deal with it.

This video made me sad. Miss him so much.

How so?

Better with the ball at his feet, more of a dribbler than a runner and has that low centre of gravity.

Small sample size so let’s not go too far but on the bits we’ve seen I think Nwaneri is better equipped to beat multiple defenders.

Could even play him as a false 9

I’m glad you said it :joy:

That’s fine. I guess a “nuance” here is that perhaps is the context of being marked by multiple people. As you said Saka is more of a runner so he’s probably better equipped to carry the ball from deep while being marked by multiple people, whereas Nwaneri might be better in tight spaces.

As if I haven’t said it enough, but I’m really looking forward to see how Arteta deals with having both Saka and Nwaneri in top condition.

That’s probably because you’ve only watched him play on the right. For U21s and England youth teams, he’s also played a lot in an advanced central role and it really gets the best out of him.

It’s nice to see the way he has been developed though. He’s really provided a strong statement on the right. Just hope he avoids injuries.

What would we see if he moved central that we’re not seeing at the moment?

You would see him playing in the same side as Saka

Ethan doesn’t have a free roaming role on the right, so naturally if he’s moved CAM we would see him operate more in the central areas, which he favours. He’ll be involved even more in link up plays with players on either side of the flank, and upfront; at the moment that’s limited due to where he’s based on the pitch from a dimension perspective.

If you’ve seen Ethan’s’ goals at youth level, they have mostly come from making ‘late’ runs in the box or runs from central position or pin point shots from central areas outside the box. These are his strongest facets of his game.

Him and Chobi combined very well in those scenarios when they use to interchange positions and it’s those positions where majority of his hat-tricks came from.

Odegaard has been poor lately, but if we have Saka on the right (who will get the best out of Ethan) and Ethan CAM, you’ll see how well Ethan is in tight areas and finding the wingers.

Unless Ethan was known for his pace only - I’d stick to him on the right, but the boy has unbelievable playmaking talent and quick feet, and for such calibre, you absolutely must either give him a free roaming role at RW or eventually shift him to CAM.

Either way, very happy how his development is going under Arteta. Curious to see how Arteta handles the Saka/Nwaneri situation.

When Arsenal have the ball, I can see the vision. When Arsenal are without it, I don’t.

Nwaneri and Chido Obi played together only maybe once or twice (I think in the FA Youth Cup) as Nwaneri was in U21s while Chido was in U18s last year and the year previous Chido was in lower levels when Nwaneri was splitting time between U18/U21. You must be thinking of someone else.

Nwaneri has mainly been the most advanced midfielder in a 4-3-3 or CAM in a 4-2-3-1 at youth level and with England, although he has also played striker quite a few times. I’m just not sure he really fits into that role in our system at PL level, especially when you consider all Odegaard does in the build up and also the immense amount of running that player has to do off the ball. Maybe as he matures physically he could do that but for this season and probably the next couple as well I’d say just play him on the wings or false nine and let him cook in the final third.
