Edu Gaspar

Decent to good fees for Xhaka and Balogun. He’s shit the bed on Turner and Holding. Not a huge fan of his loans of Tavares, Lokonga or Tierney either. Why is Pepe still here?

Easy to do so when you spend close to 500m on players.
I don’t see what’s there to brag about.

If he was generating money from outgoing players to spend on incomings, I would commend him.

Edu has sold players that no one incl. us wanted.

Fans: dont want to see x player near the pitch for Arsenal agin.

Same fans: How can we get so little for them!?

Fact is Edu was left with a lot of players not in demand, on relatively high wages. I would understand the grievance if other teams were remotely interested in signing them. Holding for example, if there was a team willing to pay more, I have no doubt we would have tried to sell him there but there obviously was no interest.

Clearly not easy to do though. See Chelsea and Man Utd. Are you really jealous of their teams right now?

When was the last time either put together a title challenging squad that actually delivered?

Does anyone think the outgoings would be any different under someone else? I very much doubt they would. This is an Arsenal thing, not an Edu thing.

I don’t think Edu can win with some people to be honest.
Some of you are acting like it’s your own money and also missing the point that getting wages off the books is important to the clubs financial planning.

Yes he’s failed to find a buyer for two players and accepted low-ball offers for players nobody seemed to want at the club anyway. So he’s not perfect, is that the problem?

Our ability to sell players for good value has been shit for over two decades. That’s not on Edu.

Agents as far as I know (could be wrong) get paid a % of the transfer fee, so in their interests to get the highest price in transfers too, so I expect there has been no market for the dross we are offloading…

The success rate is commendable but you have to acknowledge that a lot of the signings were combination of being no brainer, Arteta references and luck.

Trossard & Tomiyasu were literally offered to him and we got lucky.

Incomings and outgoings are both his domain, so if you are going to shift the credit for incomings, it seems unfair to give him all the blame for the outgoings.

Unless you have some in-depth internal relationship with the club whereby you are privy to the complexities of each deal we have done since Edu has been in the role.

Spot on. Edu is competent at his job and that’s ok. We get our business done promptly and more efficiently these days compared to the bizarre transfer negotiating style of Wenger.

Its a bit nuts how people try on hype him up as some uber exec. His incoming work is pretty standard, we pay the going rates or over for talent but its undisputed talent ID is directed by Arteta.

His loses points on the outgoing sales work, that’s actually his remit. History of the club wrt selling is irrelevant.

I will retract a bit. I have no intention to take credit away from him for incomings. He should be praised for capitalising & using all his resources, be it Arteta, his Brazilian connection or offers that came to him proactively.

He has done a great job but I don’t see his work to be as exemplary as some would suggest.

At least in terms of negotiation, he has not saved us any money.

Fair on all the other stuff. Seen a few people pull out this line recently but when Wenger used to haggle and we’d miss out, we always heard that you have to pay the market price or more for the top players and now we seem to be doing it and it becomes a criticism.

Personally I’m happy if that’s we do from now on. It’s not really reasonable to expect a discount.

For what is worth, I agree he’s shit at selling players but I do commend him for attempting to clean house by force and not letting shitters rot in the club.

Makes Arteta’s life much easier.

He also needs to be commended for the incoming business. Majority of our transfers have been successful the past 2-3 years, especially the ones the ones where we made significant investment on.
