David Raya (22)

Sorry, if it feels like you’re getting piled on. That wasn’t my intention.

What you’re saying is obviously the popular take regarding the goalkeeper situation but that doesn’t mean everyone agrees with it.

No worries, not aimed at you specifically

Just hope that Arteta can resolve the GK situation somehow, cause it’s not looking pretty atm. Both keepers have low confidence it seems, I saw how Declan Rice ran over to Raya after the game earlier. Was good to see that level of camaraderie is prominent in this squad!

Makes you wonder about some of the coaching then.

Stats like those are why they signed Ramsdale in the first place.

This was Raya last season - very high up the field for Brentford

This is Raya this season - comparably not as high as his Brentford heatmap AND…

…very similar to Ramsdale last season

It seems like a myth that Raya is doing anything different than Ramsdale.

I may not agree with you entirely on the subject being discussed. But I do agree with the above. It happens in forums, but I’m sure it isn’t always intended.

Sorry you feel like that - it is definitely not you personally - the reason I post on a lot of your takes is because you tend to post absolutes when it is not the case. Possibly how it’s said (or how I interpret it) as opposed to the general feeling you are trying to convey…

Possibly it is a myth, but I have seen players passing to Raya whilst he is nearer the half way line than his goal and I do not recall as many occasions this happened with Ramsdale.

Competent performance by him today, which is more than what we can say about most of the others.

Trying to claim a ball that was never his and causing confusion in the opening few minutes shows a degree of incompetence, I’m afraid.

I thought he punched it away, but replay showed he missed the catch.
Not good.

Not an upgrade. Average at best. He’s not making incredible game winning saves either. Goalkeeper is one position you can’t really afford bedding in time. This guy is not ready for prime time.

Contrast him with Martinez yesterday. Martinez was off his line fast, made some good saves and generally got the shithousery portion of the game correct but his kicking wasn’t fantastic.

Think if we’d swapped keepers, no way Villa win that game.

Give me an above average shot stopper with basic ball playing skills every day of the week.

Martinez is better than Raya and Ramsdale. His mentality and intangibles are a net positive to any 11. Raya gives you nervous energy

You think Martinez saves the McGinn shot ? Unlikely at best.

Give me competent officials and no way Villa wins that game.

Or Odegaard doesn’t have a rare off day with his finishing.

Can’t say he did anything wrong against Villa…
But generally I have a feeling Raya is a very mediocre shot stopper. Very mediocre reflexes and explosiveness for a small goallie, considering you usually expect those to be more explosive to make up for their lack of size. Like Casillas, Reyna, Sommer, Navas etc.

He just offers zero presence, at least for now.
To be fair, he hasn’t been tested enough to be completely sure about this, but so far that’s the impression he gives to me.

If I was a tall CB or CF-target man, I would be excited to play against Raya. He’s shorter than most GKs, so I already likely have the height advantage. He’s an awful shot stopper from what I’ve seen too.

Musical chairs with the GK position at AFC. We’ve gone through Szczesny, Cech, Leno, Ramsdale, Raya. That’s an awful amount of turnover… about a new #1 every 2 years.

He’s only about 4-5cm shorter than Ederson, Ter Stegen, Oblak etc.

He’s 6ft so still taller than most people on this forum (except me as I’m > 6ft master race)

I don’t know how long his arms are but that is more relevant than height anyway since he can use his arms and an attacker has to use their head.
