Well then Raya should have been better than Ramsdale. They recruited incorrectly.
We gave Raya a go it he has not turned out to be a better keeper, so it is fair that there shouldnât be a clear no. 1 and the players get equal opportunity to earn the place.
If you donât foster a competitive environment and make decisions based on stubbornness, then we shouldnât even have Ramsdale, should we?
As stubborn as Mikel can be, he knows Raya hasnât done anywhere near enough to be our #1. Donât kid yourself into thinking Mikel is just backing Raya cause he wants to prove a point. Raya will play as long as Mikel thinks the pros outweigh the cons and for the most part, Raya is much calmer on the ball than Ramsdale.
As for the mistakes today, the first one was disgraceful. Raya should be ashamed of himself for that one. For the second, honestly, Ramsdale doesnât save that either, cause he would have tried to save it with his hands just like Raya (think heâs conceded a few like that), instead of his legs, like we have seen De Gea, Allison do many times. That was never a save to be made with you hands, when the balls is low and close to your feet like that. The fucking GK coach has to sort that shit out.
I donât think Arteta is a good in GL talent identification. I donât even know if Raya is better.
What I do know is that Arteta believed Ramsdale just wasnât good enough for where he wants to take the club - just as he came to believe the same about Tierney, Bellerin, Willock, ESR, etc - and he tried to improve the club by getting a guy he thought could be better and raise the ceiling of the side.
So far reviews are mixed to say the least, although its still early days. But that doesnât mean trying to improve on Ramsdale was a wrong decision.
Has Raya even had a good performance for us since joining on loan. I canât think of one at all, itâs mostly been mistakes by him or our defence keeping him unbusy for large parts of a game. He can thank his lucky stars that our attack saved his ass, but I just have a bad feeling heâs going to cost us in a big game that we just canât get back into.
Those two mistakes were Sunday league level stuff. The fact the Ramsdale/Raya debate isnât going away at all shows you Raya just isnât doing the business.
You are asking Arteta to display favouritism, which will send wrong messages to the squad.
Itâs one thing doing that with Ramsdale vs Turner but itâs a different matter to do so with Raya vs Ramsdale.
I think only Wolves and Lens at home was completely error free without even a question mark. Itâs a shame as these were recent games, and it looked like he was turning a corner.
Then he starts to go back to his own Nervous Nellie default position.
I mean last season we led the table for 248 days which is the most any team has led the PL table without going on to win the league, surely thatâs challenging for the title?
Rambo was fine imo, and he was only 24 yo last season as well, hardly a finished product so itâs possible heâll just straight up get better with more experience as well. If you want someone significantly better than last seasonâs Rambo thatâs ofc fine but Iâm not convinced Raya is, for now.
Yups, I agree. Though thatâs partly my point. Our goalkeeper not being solid enough is partly why we didnât get over the line last season. Not just him, the whole backline was very poor in the last half, even when Saliba returned.
If we had either Saliba or Tomiyasu for these games, we wouldnât have fallen off like we did. We lost 3 & drew 3 in last 11 games, and thatâs down to absences in central defence, not Ramsdale.
Ramsdale screwed in one or two games all season.
Ramsdale would have been a title-winning goalkeeper if we didnât lose Saliba & Tomiyasu, completely dismissing your argument that we will not win the title with Ramsdale/Raya. They are not some Almunia-esque keeper.
They are just a level below Allison & Ederson. You will not find world-class keepers easily, so we must get the best out of level 2 keepers.
If we keep thinking that we need the absolute best in every position to win trophies, we wonât be able to win trophies again.
