It’s a stupid mistake, an unforced error. He was caught in two minds about what to do with that ball. Just a bad game for it to happen but thankfully it didn’t cost us the points.
Not sure that’s a good idea given what happened in this game…
My bootleg stream froze so just missed the blunder that led to the goal.
It’s the way you go about it really. Even I myself said it was an awful mistake, there’s not really a debate in terms of it being a bad thing to have done.
You say it is not an agenda but you do have a few viewpoints that appear to be overly specific, and I think this is one of them.
You’re welcome to your opinion but of course as is the way with forums, I’ll question it if I think the overall logic isn’t particularly sound.
I don’t think liability is the correct description for him at all.
He’s not a liability overall, but like I said earlier he’s not the elite keeper that City and Liverpool had (even if those keepers have also made mistakes in the past). I think he’s down a level from there. Could he reach that level? Maybe, idk. Do we need him to? Maybe not.
I’ll be perfectly happy with him just not doing dumb shit.
he’s like Ramsdale in the sense that they both have individual qualites that are fantastic and one of the best around, but they both can be dumb sometimes
If we could merge them a la Jeff Goldblum in The Fly we’d have a truly elite keeper.
but the only problem is the dumb moments of both keepers would combine as well
The fact he’d have four arms would surely make up for it?
Huge howler for the goal but did brilliantly at collecting every cross Spuds put it after.
Sometimes as a fanbase we’re guilty of holding players to ransom indefinitely in moments like these, or awaiting a moment like this to confirm our biases.
I’m not going to dwell too much on his mistake today and can’t deny that I probably wouldn’t have been harsher if the outcome in the end cost us. However, we won the game and that’s more important than anything.
Just a slight shame that the result of his error will take what could have been a pretty embarrassing day for Spurs away from us. I was beginning to think at 3 up we were going to be the more likely team to score the next goal if there was going to be one.
Fuck that guy. Cost us the league and top four.
Sorry, yes we certainly do hold things against players to too long. Life is short and we should all be more forgiving.
But what was he even attempting there… I don’t get it… Totally unnecessary risk taking… Something good goal keepers shouldn’t do… Yes mistakes happen but at this level you should be forced into the mistake not gifting the opponent with unforced errors.
As a team, they need to tighten it up at the back. Not sure if it is overconfidence or something else but we do have a tendency to gift goals by being too casual.
Such a stupid decision, caused so much unnecessary stress. Lucky to get away without any impact on the result.
Honestly, we need an upgrade on this guy. He’s not going to clear up these brain farts.
I think that’s harsh. Raya has been outstanding this season overall…ultimately the individual mistakes from Raya and Rice didn’t cost us today - you could argue they have been our two most consistent players this season.
I think the second point explains the first. His mistakes haven’t cost us overall (away at Chelsea, home v Man City, today at Spurs) but he does make mistakes far more often than I’ve seen other PL 'keepers make similar errors.
I’m in no doubt that it wouldn’t take too much effort/scouting to upgrade on Raya.
(In reality, this is very unlikely to happen. My understanding is that we’re all ready to go with the obligatory purchase after the loan spell ends)
Still think this is harsh. He is an upgrade on Ramsdale, albeit not a significant jump, but he has proved his quality this season. Reality is that no player is guaranteed under Arteta who wants to constantly improve the team.
Off the top of my head I’ve seen Alisson, Onana and Vicario make way more mistakes this season.
The former is regarded as the world’s best goalie and the latter was getting goalkeeper of season shouts a couple months ago.
I do really enjoy how Raya is getting rinsed for an error in this fixture, when this game against Spurs over the past 15 years has been dominated by some random player being a dumb fucking bellend and costing us the game.
We’ve gone home with 3 points, and our boy is going to win the golden glove this season.
In terms of influence on our defensive stability, this is our best keeper since Lehmann '04. Ramsdale, as much as I love the human being, would have seen us leave with a point or less.
