This is a bad take. He had a very strong response to the mistake, he had a very strong game outside of the mistake and you won’t find another keeper in football that doesn’t make these kind of errors.
Alisson had a double blunder against us and has made plenty of suspect passes and errors and he’s generally considered the top 1 or 2 keeper in the league.
Raya has had a really strong response to the initial shaky start and I can’t believe there is still an agenda against him.
Yeah, he’s been quite strong in this second half of the season, but whad did he even tried to do there?!
Just too reckless and casual at times. This wasn’t just a technical error, you don’t even try to do these kind of passes, on your weaker foot in a situation like that.
Tries to do too much on the ball at times, when there’s not much to gain with it. Invinting the pressure and ending up kicking a panicked random pass (or conceeding a goal like today). Has to improve on this.
He’s very calm on the ball, but not that good on it actually. His confidence is higher than his actual ability in this regard.
I’m not desperate. I’m calling it as I see it. I think he’s error prone. I also think he’s way better than Ramsdale at correcting for his errors. To be fair to him, I think if it were Ramsdale who made that mistake (which he kind of did against Southampton) he would have likely gone to pieces.
I’m just not sold on him as being elite. And yeah, you’re right Allisson made a huge error against us but he’s also gave Liverpool what? Five great years?
I’m not saying Raya is awful. I don’t hate him. I just don’t think he’s amazing. If he’s as good as the coaching staff clearly think he is, then he needs to cut this shit out.
This mistake and the Bayern one are the same for me. It’s just a lack of concentration at a time when it’s totally unnecessary.
He was quality until his arrogance nearly ended our season but he was good after that. Extremely pissed off with him though and hate that we still have these calamitous moments in our locker. But what a massive result.
Like I said to @Bavin Allisson has a great track record to fall back on at Liverpool. I don’t think Raya has that here yet. He responded well, but I disagree with your point that he had a strong game. I think parts of his game were strong today like the shot stopping and claiming, I’m not sure about his kicking decisions.
How much do you actually watch Liverpool? Be honest. Because I watch probably 80% of their games and there are plenty of shaky moments from him. He’s significantly worse with the ball than Raya but a better keeper in terms of raw fundamentals. It’s not like the mistake against us was his one blemish in 5 years.
And I don’t want this to become a direct comparison, my point is the elite guys make mistakes and it’s how you respond that matters, which Raya did well today. I’m not forgiving the error, it was terrible, but we need to apply a broader view than this.
That’s Raya’s whole deal though. He’s supposed to be excellent with the ball to add basically an extra outfield player when we play out, right?
I agree that it’s the response that mattered more today but it’s not agenda to call out this type of mistake he’s made twice in big matches (here and Bayern). It’s all credit to him and the team for overcoming it today. Will I ever be his biggest fan because of how we structured the deal and tied up money that we could have used in other areas? Probably not. But I’m not blind to his strong points.
And it’s not the end of the world right? If Claudio Bravo can win a PL title we can have David Raya as our keeper and win a PL title.
