I’m not. Though I would add that Luiz playing for Arsenal now and Lovren signing for Zenit St Petersburg does offer some indication.
Yes they are. Perhaps there’s room for more than one class to exist above Lovren? One in which superior players like David Luiz would belong, without putting them in the same category as Campbell, Adams et al. You’re talking as if there’s no room for nuance, as if you’re either in the average defender camp with players like Lovren or you’re in the world class, greatest defenders of their generation category with Adams, Campbell.
You can not rate Luiz very much (especially this older iteration) and still acknowledge that there’s a level of defender that he is superior to.
18 appearances in 18/19 and 15 in 19/20. The guy has been peripheral to Liverpool’s success. Him being relegated to bit part player is part of their success story, he didn’t play a key part in that success and then get lose his spot and get moved on or anything like that. He’s been shit for ages.
Whatever, we clearly just disagree, neither of us are changing our minds
David Luiz is such a weird player there’s absolutely no point discussing his level because on his better days he’s absolutely world class, scoring banger free kicks, playing Pirlo esque balls up the pitch and using his frame and athleticism to command and win everything in the box. On his off days he barely looks like a footballer.
You could ask 10 different people about him and depending on when they watched him you could get 10 totally contrasting opinions that would all be based in reality.
I am sure if you measure every positive contribution Luiz provides which would include his passing and chance creation, he is definitely a net positive player.
He just has too much stupid moments to be considered an elite.
Ah he’s definitely better than Lovren! Luiz is such a big personality that every thing he does wrong is highlighted. I actually reckon that if he had a buzz cut rather than looking like Sideshow Bob, some of his mistakes would go unnoticed.
My big question is whether a Luiz-Saliba partnership could work, assuming for the moment (obviously might not be the case) that Saliba is more or less what we hope him to be - very fast, very physical, decent on the ball, and more than a bit raw. I feel like they might actually have complimentary skill sets but maybe I’m just hoping.
We’re not going anywhere next year unless we can play a four man defense regularly against mid and bottom table clubs. But we need a non-disastrous CB partnership to make that work and Saliba-Luiz looks like our best bet as Mari remains a total question mark, Holding doesn’t inspire confidence at all, and if we sign another CB its unlikely to be someone who can step in immediately.
Okay fair enough but I haven’t changed my mind on his signing since day one.
I’ll agree to say we finished in the league were we did because of his contribution.
