2 of those he was put in the shitter due to stupidity on the part of his teammates tbf.

The Chelsea one was all Mustafi. And that awful pass by Kola the city one or is that something else?

David Luiz is one of the worst defenders that we have had at our club, and feck me we have had some bad ones…But…And I don’t know why, I actually quite like him…He comes across really well…Don’t know why, as I say, but I like the geezer…

The one today too. Holding making a mess of things.

I really like him as a person (well, his public persona) and used to like him as that one-on-one a bit crazy defender who could waltz up and make a good deep pass etc. A few years ago. Would still love it if he stayed for morale and dressing room boost, maybe even help with coaching I don’t know, but not to start our important games perhaps.

As long as that good game again is in the cup final then all can be forgiven.

He’s such a strange player. In many aspects a lot like Mustafi, where the talent is there they just have brain dead moments. Luiz is great in the air, I’ve never felt as confident with him back there when a cross comes in, excellent positioning in that regard. Great passer as well, clearly he helps us pass out from the back. But yeh just does some really stupid shit and loses focus apparently.

He’s not even close to being like Mustafi. That’s why he’s won so much and played for the likes of PSG, Chelsea and has a lot of caps for Brazil. Whilst the shitter in our team has probable been available for next to nothing for nearly the entire duration of his contract without us being able to get shot of him.

He doesn’t do stuff like go to ground at every opportunity or get caught out of position and then scream at other players for mistakes he makes.

Luiz is a leader, who is capable of long stretches of consistent play (and then equally capable of doing dumb stuff at times). That season everyone was fawning over VVD for not being dribbled past, Luiz was only dribbled past twice in that season himself. (I think it’s a shit stat btw- but it’s an illustration of how he can string together consistent performances which is something we’ll never see from Mustafi)

Playing in a back 3 in a big game he tends to be fine, think we just need to learn when to use him
(Although of course we haven’t had much choice recently with our lack of options)

5 penalties 2 red cards in the league this season where we finish 10th or wherever, may as well hand Mustafi a new contract aswell as we seem to enjoying fucking ourselves.

We lost alot of our games where he got absolutely skinned by players by pushing too high at the start of the season. Another xhaka where we need to have about 14 defenders surrounding him.

Thing is Luiz has never been the main defender at any club he has been at. He’s always been that complimentary ball player next to someone world class.

Here he’s expected to be the main man and now getting ridiculously exposed. Also it’s literally a toss of a coin which Luiz turns up on the day.

He’s a ballwatcher on crosses in. Good when he decides to jump. Doesn’t read the game naturally though for a reliable CB and is far too costly.
He’s in the Lovren quality of defender. Wont ever be able too change that now.

I don’t even say this to leap to Luiz’ defence, but he is absolutely a class above fucking Lovren, come now.

No hes that level. Both been captains. Both have strengths. Both have brain farts. Equal deficiencies.
The weaknesses out weigh the strengths.

Good point to be fair, look what happened vs Germany when he didnt have his daddy next to him

Ozio did him dirty that day. Hell, even Khedira ruined Brazil too that day.

Feels like a pretty flimsy basis for your point if I’m honest, as you could pretty much say these three things about thousands of very different defenders.

Both have been captains… Really?!

Okay they both play for big clubs. Been in major finals. Both played at the pinnacle of the game. Both are renowned as suspect defenders who have had decent performances over the seasons. Wheres the class above your putting between the two.

Well David Luiz spent the majority of his career at the top of the game, playing for excellent sides and being a key part of them.

Lovren hasn’t played for as good teams as Luiz generally, and the only time he did was for Liverpool in the past couple of seasons, when he was not a key player at all and was widely regarded as being properly shit and a player who needed upgrading, and now they’ve finally got rid and he’ll see his days out in Russia, which is much more his level.

Luiz is a flawed player who can at times play brilliantly in the right circumstances, because he is a talented footballer. Lovren is just average and pretty much always has been.

Lovren has played in a CL final and a WC final. Been relegated to the bench at one of the best teams around now and finally moved on.
There’s no gulf between them now. Luiz was sold at a defensively struggling Chelsea as not good enough or a bigger hindering player than what they have.
Let’s not make out him playing for Arsenal and Lovren not starting for Liverpool is the class gulf now.
Adams, Keown, Campbell are class above players not these two. These are flawed average defenders. Nothing more. Nothing less.
