David Luiz

I believe we already did just that. Early days but performances since suggest it was a good idea lol

Good enough for a 4 years deal.

Sorry, we only give Southampton reserve RBs four year deals around here.

That was my point :sunglasses:

Was a nice touch consoling his ex team mates. Didn’t see any of ours consoling Giroud  lol !?

Oh I did that in the early hours

After the debacle with Cech and Sylvestre where we were going away to their former clubs and getting spanked it’s nice to see us sign someone who can play a pivotal role in dishing out a convincing win over his former club.

I know he’s made his fair share of errors. But honestly since Arteta has arrived we play in a system far more suited to his capabilities. He has a great passing range, he’s a good reader of the game and he can still give us another season.

He’s a dressing room leader, with huge experience at the top level. Giving him a year extension was a no brainer and I’m glad the club didn’t bow down to the pressure after his horror show against City.

He isn’t perfect and I knew that when he came in. I advocated his signing because I knew that what we were getting was much more than the usual trash that gets spouted on social media about him being shit. He’s far from shit. The Ā£8m we spent on him will be seen as a master stroke because of his leadership, experience and the fact he STILL has the hunger to play the game.

I trust Saliba being integrated so much more with a good system next season, experience in the form of Luiz and playing under the tutelage of Arteta.

Have to say there are some disgraceful takes on Koscielny on this forum.

Defensively not a fucking chance. Going forward 90% of Luiz’s long balls are nonsensical to say the least whereas Koscielny scored a ton of crucial goals for us off set pieces. If you compare Luiz’s passing from the back and goals over his career to Koscielny’s goal contributions they would easily match up or be bettered by Kos. The only thing Luiz has over him on a net level is a much better fitness record.

Luiz is only performing well defensively in a back five, but he has been a train wreck in a back four for years. Whilst he has been outstanding in the cup run he’s shown he can only do it in this system.

When we go back to a four he is finished and we all know it.

Kosh never backed off like Luiz does, never dived in or tugged at players stupidly like him either. You pull up a Koscielny horror moment and you’ll get 4/5 Luiz ones. Luiz when he’s 1 on 1 is a SHIT defender.

Koscielny was more aggressive, better timing on his tackles, more vigilant and had far better reactions.

Koscielny never really had the luxury of back fives and his injury problems were outrageous. That was the main reason he needed replacing because defensively he was still head and shoulders above the rest of our pack.

Kos was a fucking animal for this club year in year out in some of the most chaotic defensive setups. Leaving with such bad grace took away far too much of the respect from a guy that was always in the wars for us.

Honestly he might also be our best playmaker as well, which is tragic but…

Seems to be the only one that finds Auba when he’s making a run. He is a specialist with that ball over the top.

Miles ahead of Koscielny @Hass :vinai: and I have no problems with the way he left.

I’d be raging too if some bum wanted me to ruin my Achilles with smalldick.

I know he’s played in midfield on occasion. I’m wondering if we are able to move to a back 4, could he be effective in front of them? If we can’t get a proper DM, would he work there? Closer to the sweeper role of a back 3 and would make use of his passing range. Just a thought.

Kos has to be the most overrated Arsenal defender in history. Guy was responsible for high profile mistakes and the only time he really looked good was when he had Mertesacker next to him tidying up when he got over excited and raced out of position to try.

I remember when people used to rank him as some kind of European elite defender when he never really was.

Luiz has had an elite career, he’s won everything there is to win and he’s played a pivotal role in winning those trophies too. He’s 33 years old now, he’s certainly not in his physical prime so the system almost certainly needs to be adapted to protect him.

But at their peaks, I’d have taken Luiz over Koscielny.

There is no need to bring down Koscielny to appraise Luiz.
If Luiz played for us during banter years, even in his prime he would have looked like a clown. And Koscielny would have been more recognized had he played for Chelsea and PSG.

I do agree that we end up benefitting from Koscielny having a hissy fit because I don’t think Kos would have contributed as much because of his fitness issues.

Luiz is a class act. Koscielny doesn’t have the personality nor could he have influenced the club as much as Luiz has done this season.

While the other players are off celebrating our goals, Luiz and often times Xhaka will be receiving instruction from Arteta. Make no mistakes, they are our leaders on the pitch. Off the pitch, there is no comparison between Luiz and Koscielny.

Joe Willock - ā€œThe player I look up to most at Arsenal has to be David Luiz,ā€ Willock admitted. ā€œNot only is he an amazing player, he’s an amazing person as well. He’s like a mentor and a big brother to me.ā€

Calum Chambers - ā€œDavid has been brilliant, he has come in and no-one in the club has a bad word to say about him,ā€ Chambers said.

ā€œHe is one of the nicest guys I have met, he talks to you, gives you advice and makes everyone feel like he is giving you his undivided attention.ā€

Here’s to David :beers:

None of them is captain(sorry Xhaka) but I reckon these are the silent leaders in the dressing room.

I reserve all rights to call him every name under the sun and totally lose my shit with him when he inevitably makes a very stupid, big mistake at some point.

But I can’t deny that I do really fucking like this guy, and that he seems like a pretty fantastic person to have in our dressing room, the kind of personality and attitude that could have a really positive effect on those around him. Does also help that he is still capable of putting in absolutely colossal performances sometimes.

I really liked and rated Koscielny, and think people are shitting on his name unduly (not that I give a fuck tbh lol), but it feels like him going and Luiz coming in for basically a few million quid negative net has been for the best. Leaving aside performances and fitness, I echo others who think that Luiz’ character and way of being compared to Koscielny’s is good for the club now that we’re making a fresh start.

can see Luiz being a coach in the future with all this advice he seems to give other players
