Didnt they win the Euros?

2006 - Ronaldo, Figo (33), Deco, Carvalho
2010 - Ronaldo, Deco (33), Carvalho (32), Pepe and maybe you can include Bruno Alves but that’s a push.
2014 - Ronaldo, Moutinho, Pepe
2018 it improves - Ronaldo, Moutinho, Pepe, Bernardo, Quaresma, Bruno
2022 - Ronaldo (37), Cancelo, Dias, Pepe (39), Bernardo, Bruno, Felix, Leao

And in both 2018 and 2022 the supporting cast have improved as well, likes of Guerreiro, Neves, Nunes etc.

Portugal definitely in their window now and have been getting better as a squad every tournament since 2016.

So in the last 2 decades Portugal have had Figo Couto Rui Costa Nuno Gomes Ricardo Carvalho Rui Patricio and Moutinho.
Only a few I could mention who were absolute class hardly dogshit

2000-2010 not included? Changes the scale a bit but no way has Portugal’s talent pool been bad in the last 25 years at least.

And by comparison with the Argentines I would say it’s right up there if not at times better than Argentina’s squads balance wise.

I would say Ronaldo and Messi have both had adequately strong teams talent wise to compete for the major tournaments.

Didn’t bother to include prior to 2010 as Ronaldo first WC was 2006 iirc and felt like he wasn’t established by that point but he was so should’ve included that.

It was about Ronaldo so don’t see the point including ones before him just because trion arbitrarily said two decades.

The rest I completely disagree with just based on gut feel (cba to check Argentina squads as well now) - always felt to me Argentina have had a stacked squad and failed to deliver, often because of the managers but also players underperforming.

Portugal only recently feel like they have a squad capable of winning things (and did). Prior to this WC I said they had one of the best squads now, put them third still behind Argentina but no major difference other than Messi in better form than old Ron this season.

How many world class or top class players do you remember playing for Portugal?

It was a hyperbole but I don’t think Portugal ever had a team in those times that was strong enough to win a tournament.
Even when they won the Euros, I was unconvinced.

Where is the guy who scored the winner that day?

Talent wise they definitely had the players but as a team it didn’t really work, much the same as the golden generation of England players, the talent was there but as a team a complete let down.

Really? which set of players do you think could have achieved more with better coaching?

Portugal weren’t gonna win shit with Raul Meireles in central midfield and fm legend Miguel Veloso shielding the defence. Poundland Ronaldo (Nani) on the other wing.

Portugal squads since the Rui Costa and Figo days were never that good imo, this is the first tournament where I’d consider them one of the favourites. The last 5 years has really been a blow up in Portuguese talent at the top level.

Of course it’s opinion based as there’s no way to factually rate a squad of players against another but I’ve never really heard anyone talking about Portugal underperforming as a nation, unlike Argentina which seems a commonly held perception.

This kind of mock/hate is just way too much, way out of proportion.

He works his ass off (training/diet) for his whole life to be one of the best in the world.
Yes, he is narcissist, and so???
He loves himself more than anybody/anything, if anybody wants to criticize him then throw him a bible and bash him on religious level.

On his selfishness, it is in between the team(s) and him.
He is not killing anybody or committed any crime, he just try to get the best out of every contract, every opportunity. Call him an opportunist is more appropriate.

Like him or not, he has won multiple Ballon d’Or and CL and helped his country to win the Euro.
A mercenary? One of the very best.

‘Shit person, but he’s good at football. One of the best’

He is not different from people around us daily, or we are just sharing more or less of his personality/character in some ways.
I won’t call all these people are shit people.

The love players get from fans is out of proportion too. At the end of the day, they kick a ball around for a living, being good at it shouldn’t really make them a god either.
