Cristiano Ronaldo

Mbappe isn’t getting crowned anything because he’s coming across as a bit of a cunt already and he hasn’t left the farmers league.

Also let’s not forget Haaland, while a more limited all round game compared to Mbappe, still an incredible freak of a footballer.

Not sure what’s bad about top quality footballers being around longer though, the real shame is the lack of quality coming through now - not having to watch Ronaldo and messi for 20 years. All those players you listed @Craigie most people seem to wish they’d been around at the top longer, particularly R9.

I wonder why…

Lol Ronaldo wasn’t that much a cunt early on, just a diving pussy.

Mbappe is already acting like 37 year old Ronaldo with new gen expectations of having everything he wants. 600m deal and he’s still not happy cos Neymar and Messi are outshining him at club level, when should be glad to have them as teammates.

Dunno, Ronaldo was always seen as a cunt by the outset.

It’s only in recent years when he eclipsed Messi after being counted out that people started appreciating him.

Ronaldo has gone on record saying he used to love it when he got booed and it showed by his performances as that’s when he truly stepped up. Seeing this a lot with Mbappe now, he is getting booed a lot so far in the World Cup and you can feel he is feeding off it.

I think he low-key likes being the ā€œvillainā€ and has definitely picked up Ronaldo’s siege mentality.

I guess if you’re a top level athlete you need to find any psychological edge possible especially if you won the WC at the start of your career.

Thought that was mostly by English fans cos of the Euros and Arsenal fans cos he always ripped us to shreds.

I could be remembering wrong or just I liked Ronaldo more at the time than I do Mbappe now

@Starboy mentioned he is getting outshined by Neymar and Messi at club level.
He got outshined by his NT teammate Benzema in the Euros too, and then when they faced each other in the CL.

I feel Mbappe kinda enjoys and feeds off knowing he is better than all 3 of them and has yet to be recognized for it with a Ballon D’Or.

The swagger he plays nowadays is so different than the guy that broke through in 2017/18. Back then he was quite well liked. I think in that World Cup run he was the kid people liked the most in that French NT. Funny how it’s totally the opposite now.

It’s interesting to see how the next generation fairs, it’s pretty much a bunch of CR7 stans colliding.
Mbappe, Haaland, Saka, Martinelli, Leao, Kvara, Sancho, Garnacho, Rashford, Endrick, Vini, etc.

Ronaldo and Messi never could win a WC (we will see about this one). I don’t think either one of them had teams worse than France’s. Let’s not forget France had massive dressing room issues. Deschamps was labeled as a poor shitty coach (which I disagree with and he is proving it again this WC). Somehow they managed to still become world champions.

So that counts against Messi and Ronaldo. They should be the ones taking their teams to glory at all cost. I do feel both coming short in that regard.

Lol, you can’t be serious with that. France and Brazil had the best squads in 2018.

Check some of the dross Ronaldo and Messi played with in previous WCs.
Ronaldo had to carry a nation that has never won a major honour before and Messi had to carry the pressure of being the ā€œnextā€ Maradona.

Footballing super nations like yours(Netherlands) have zero WCs to show for I’d expect you to understand how difficult it is to win a WC.

Higuain alone cost Messi three trophies imo. Guy turned into prime Gervinho in pressure moments.

Unfortunately it was the Napoli dna

We are not a super football nation for a long time.

I still maintain Messi and Ronaldo fell short for their NTs.

Portugal has been dogshit talent-wise apart from Ronaldo in last 2 decade.
Argentina however definitely underperformed as a team of brilliant individuals.

ye the ā€œshitty teamā€ excuse might work for CR and Portugal to some degree, trying to pull it for Messi and Argentina in comparison doesn’t fly.

I used to have this thinking also… such and such doesn’t leave the easy league(s) and playing easy opponents…

Until I saw Haaland and then I have a change of mind.

He could tore the EPL apart (if healthy).
Staying in the Bundesliga or playing in the EPL does not matter, as long as the player himself is good enough.

So, Messi staying in La Liga/Ligue 1, Mbappe staying in France… does not matter cause, if you are good you are good.

Yep.

Zidane and the proper Ronaldo would have been good enough here, too. It’s almost a given with a handful of players.

That is true but from an achievement POV I believe it’s important for the best to show they actually can do well in the best leagues and leagues with different styles of play.

It’s not necessarily definitive but for me I like to see the best prove themselves on multiple levels.

It’s one thing to have potentially been able to and another thing completely to have actually done it.

There’s no doubt Messi and Ronaldo have been good enough during their careers to be part of sides that win a World Cup but if they don’t end up doing it then it will be used against them as part of summarising their legacy.

If Mbappe somehow ends up with two world cups and R&M with none

Damning on their legacy

Although their peak performances will always remain legendary

I find it very unfair to judge a player by what success he’s had with his NT.
