Christian Norgaard

Can you prove this?

I’ll never understand this notion that we can’t possibly work on multiple deals at once so doing one thing means we’re not working hard enough on another. There is an entire team of people and this is their job.

Not even 2 weeks have passed since the window opened. We’re almost a month away from when we head out for our preseason tour.

And again if anything, this is exactly the type of move that enables more investment elsewhere and specifically the front line.

:red_square: Thomas Partey (1st image)

Think of Partey as a tidy and reliable passer who helps move the ball around cleanly, mostly in the midfield.
• :white_check_mark: He completes a lot of passes (top 20% of midfielders) and is very accurate, especially with short and medium passes.
• :white_check_mark: He’s good at getting the ball forward into dangerous areas (top 25% in “passes into final third” and “penalty area”).
• :counterclockwise_arrows_button: Not amazing at long balls – just average or below.
• :cross_mark: He doesn’t create many chances (low on assists, expected assists, and key passes).

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Summary: Partey is like a midfield controller — he keeps the ball moving, links up play, and helps his team progress forward. But he’s not really a creator or someone who racks up assists.

:brown_square: Christian Nørgaard (2nd image)

Nørgaard is more of a defensive midfielder who focuses on breaking up play and keeping things simple.
• :cross_mark: He doesn’t complete or attempt as many passes, and his passing accuracy is lower than Partey’s.
• :cross_mark: He’s worse in short and medium pass accuracy – this suggests he’s not as polished on the ball.
• :white_check_mark: Surprisingly, he scores well in assists (75th percentile) — probably because of a few key moments or short passes that lead to goals.
• :repeat_button: Like Partey, he’s not great with long passes or key creative stats.
• :green_circle: Decent at getting the ball into the final third and penalty area.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Summary: Nørgaard is more of a “destroyer” type midfielder — not fancy, not super creative, but puts in effort, and occasionally helps with an assist or forward pass.

This is what I’m saying he’s not the same mould so if/when we have to rely on him it could be an issue

If we’re losing Partey and Jorginho why should Nordgaard be option #1?

He doesn’t improve on or give continuity in what the midfield is in terms of ability on the ball. Doesn’t enable us to be less risk adverse or control games.

Yeah, that tweet is comedy.

They are basically the same age, and how is this “excellent business” while we are paying 11M for him, on a short term contract probably. 11M would be more than one year of Partey’s wages.

This seems a bit of a panic buy with Jorginho already gone and Partey looking likely to leave.
Norgaard would be an adequate replacement but certainly won’t strengthen our midfield depth.

Poor Brentford. Surely battling relegation next year after losing Frank, Mbuemo and Nørgaard?

add to it their pathetic managerial signing

So it begins…

:partey:

All in all, I’m OK with him, a decent cover.
But if we are comparing him to the possibility of having Partey as a cover it’s an obvious downgrade.

I don’t understand the frustration with this signing. Zubi was always going to start over Partey anyway. A bench player replaced with a bench player.

I think it depends on how you project them to age. Partey really started to lose his legs these last few years, to the point where this spring he had games where he simply couldn’t keep up physically at all with the way we want to play. If he was asking for a two year deal, how do we imagine those legs looking in the spring of 26 or spring of 27?

Norgaard is slightly cheaper on a two year deal for a 10m pound fee and 80k wages than Partey would have been on a two year deal for his current wage, and definitely cheaper if Partey was asking for a raise (not sure if that’s the case but it has been reported). Norgaard is reportedly only on 40k at Brentford so I think 80k is probably reasonable for what we’re offering.

I don’t think Norgaard is particularly great but IMO people overrate Partey and don’t take into enough account his physical decline and what that likely means going forward.

I think you could reasonably ask why we’re not going for a player like Agoume instead but then again its a big ask for a very young player from outside the PL to be a backup 6, hardly ever play, and then get thrown into the deep end when the starter gets a knock. We see how that worked with Lokonga.

Setting aside the physical aspect because really anyone we brought in should be better physically, that’s bare minimum. What about the ability on the ball and when he has to see significant minutes

If Zubimendi were to miss a few months then what does it look like, because we know Arteta doesn’t really have different clubs in his bag.

Rice can fill in that position if needed.

Rice and MLS?

I want to see the squad depth improve. Now obviously players were leaving so they had to be replaced.

Three signings in and I’m not sure our squad strength is better. (Kepa is obviously than trash Neto but Id be surprised if he plays much)

Also a bit weird no Odegaard back up is on the radar as of so far.

We’ve replaced Partey with Zubimendi and now we’re replacing Jorghino’s role in the squad. At this price, it makes sense.

I suspect the timing will understandably frustrate our fans as we’ve only brought in defensive players so far but if we can get this done within the 24/25 budget then it will have no affect on the attacking signings in July/August.

No I can’t, but I have a gut feeling based on how I know we act as a club.
