Chelsea

I just can’t wrap my head around why anyone would think a club being called by a different name would suddenly increase its appeal? By all means if you have something to support this I’m interested to hear about it. Even in American sports where they move franchises around the country they almost never change the team name, just the city they are attached to.

Stadium moves, stadium names…these are just not the same thing as the name of the actual club/team/institution.

Are there any instances of a successful football club changing their name to appeal to a more global audience? I can’t think of any off hand

London cowboys lol sounds like a rugby team

Exactly. There is close to zero chance that Chelsea are going to change their name.

This is just red meat to people who dislike the influence of American money in our game.

Pretty sure London Cowboys is the name of the dreadful plumbing company I used last year

On a side note, it is kind of strange how London was never used in any clubs name.

Meant for the Chelsea thread :zipper_mouth_face:

No, I don’t think there are but we’ve never had so many foreign owners before and the influx of American owners who want to make changes to the way the game is run isn’t going to stop.
As I’ve said, I’m not saying it will happen but it’s not that far fetched.

I’ve used them. Work for 61 mins and charge you for 2 hours?

Cockney cowboys came from Hersham according to Sham 69.

Chelsea is a trade mark of its own…the owner can’t just change the name without asking the fans…and risking revolt and empty stadium

Otherwise it will be funny innovation indeed

Chelsea had neighbours who thought the same thing and now they’re Milton Keynes Dons. :grinning:

That’s not entirely true.

In the NBA you’ve had instances of both with the Seattle Supersonics becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder but also the hilarious situation of the New Orleans Jazz becoming the Utah Jazz and the Minneapolis Lakers becoming the LA Lakers. (Mormons love jazz and there are so many lakes in LA, right?)

In baseball the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals.

In American football you’ve had both. The Chargers and Raiders have moved cities but kept their team names, the Browns moved to Baltimore but were required by the league to change their name.

I don’t know that changing the club name would increase the appeal for people who already watch football in North America but playing up the fact that team plays in London might allow Chelsea to try to capture some of the casualwear market the same way that PSG has really leaned into the “Paris = fashion” aspect of their brand. I don’t think it’s an accident that West Ham’s new crest says “London” on it because someone totally out of the loop would be able to look at the badge and be like “hmm I guess the team is in London”

Not saying it’s a good idea but that might be one reason why an American owner would want to change the name.

I said almost never tbf.

Ah. That makes you technically correct which is the best kind of correct.

All the American expats I know in London all support Chelsea because of Pulisic and go to Chelsea games semi-regularly.

I could easily see a boost in new American supporters with a name change to the London Cowboys tbh, because they’d think it was cool and funny that they could influence like that over a big English club.

Think of it a bit like Brentford, everyone in Denmark loves Brentford and there always loads of Danes at Brentford games because of that connection.

If you’re a Yank looking for a team to support, seeing a team called the London Cowboys with an American owner and American players like Pulisic I could definitely see that being a draw as it makes the team more relatable. “Oh the Cowboys!! Like the Dallas Cowboys, awesome!!! USA USA USA!!”

It just wouldn’t surprise me at all if it did happen, although I highly doubt it’ll happen anytime soon.

This is an accurate depiction of how Americans often dissemble into patriotic grunting.

I mean it’s not really a criticism, all of my Danish friends have a huge hard on for Brentford so I totally get it.

Chelsea is an established name…winners of CL ect…don’t know if there is some high boots culture in England…it doesn’t fit in the picture you know

Boelhi is an investor…he knows what popularity and annual profit means for an business enterprise to be successful

I’m in doubts its serious this one affair though…but world is in turmoil nova days

Oh I didn’t think it was. I often find it really weird that outlets like NBC or Fox Sports will push Chelsea because Pulisic sits on the bench for them. If he was playing and playing well that’s one thing, but he’s not even playing.

Yea a load of Irish lads owned Sunderland around the time Roy Keane became their manager and it lead to a lot of people here adopting Sunderland as a second team etc but fast forward a few years and you’d be hard pressed to find an Irish person who gives a fuck and they are 6 or 7 owners later now or whatever.

Thankfully they never became the Sunderland Shamrocks because even if there would be some initial buy in to that it would have been laughable and a really really bad idea and look utterly foolish at this stage.
