The fact they’re by the centre circle doesn’t mean Saliba didn’t prevent a goalscoring opportunity.

It’s not a clear red because of how far away from goal he is.
Every week you see players ‘through on goal’ but by the time they’ve dribbled X yards a defender’s caught up. He’s only just past the half way line for god’s sake
If the referee gives it I can understand it not being overturned - but with the ‘high bar’ for VAR (which was increased again this year) I cannot understand why VAR are intervening

Saliba probably had a decent chance of getting into a decent enough position if he just let Evanilson go
I’ve turned it off. Not putting myself through the stress of watching it. Right now we are just getting bombarded with shots.
Never a red imo, but Saliba shouldn’t be making those challenges at the centre circle. Every chance nothing would’ve come out of that move.

If it’s deemed a fair red then the rule should be that any player who is fouled as the last man should result in a sending off. That would really clearly define it, but once again we’re on the wrong end of another 50/50.

If nothing else Saliba has to think what the next game is and not give the ref a chance.
He knew it’s a big title game up next, better off having to come back from 1-0 down (worst case) than missing next week.
