That’s definitely not a fake quote from Wenger this time (unlike the ones which he wanted to join Man Utd)- he started off a sentence with “look” this time

No, it’s to play winning football.

We would sometimes play attractive football and lose to one shot on target.

We need someone who can do both ugly and attractive.

With the weak teams he had, yes he did.

Tell Barce/Real fans that. It’s a belief certain fans have, football should be played in a certain way and we should be entertained, United and even West Ham believe in this.

Why were they weak?
He bought the players, he chose the players for the team and he coached them.
He always went on about them having “mental strength,” when, in reality, for several seasons, we had a weak team both mentally and physically.

It’s no good pleading poverty because he spent as much on players as clubs like Leicester, spurs and Liverpool, and their managers have all done better than him, while not having anywhere near the PL experience and control he did with us.

While Liverpool were going out and buying players like Salah, Mane and Firmino, we went out and bought Xhaka, Mustafi and Perez, that is the reason we were weak, because he that’s what he made us.

Nah that’s bollox, for way more than a decade we had sub zero net spend and had loads of players that wouldn’t get a look in at other top 4 clubs. Liverpool hit the jack pot on big money sales due to investing in the prior decades and having saleable assets. We fucked up for a few seasons.

The 2015-2016 summer transfer window fuck ups sealed his fate in truth.

Also it’s clear Wenger gets way more out of players than anyone else. Alexis and Ozil are considered shit as soon as Wenger stops managing them. Alex Song is the top midfield assist king under Wenger. Adebeyor is prolific under Wenger and a nobody elsewhere.

@oompa and @arsenescoatmaker are going to die on the hill that Arsenal fell out of top four because of the construction of Emirates Stadium.

Think it goes both ways. Arsene certainly brought out the best in almost every player he coached. He had a nag of installing confidence in his players. The guy could make average players like Adebayor look like prime Baggio. But that also begs the questions of the what could have beens. Only if he had better players at his disposal than the majority average lads he had post 2006. He could have won so much more. Part of this comes down to being restricted on funds initially. But one can’t shy away from the fact he failed to build a solid team when he did start getting the funds. However, on the balance of things, and having done it for so long, it’s fair to say Arsene did bring out the most of what was an average squad for the majority of his career post 2006. The guy secured top 4 with Andre Santos at LB ffs. Though you could argue his major strength: his unshakable trust in his players, kind of did him in the end.

It was tactics as the game evolved more than money that done for his demise.

Tactics are important, but if you’ve got a team full of eleven world class players(which costs money and/or good youth setup) playing keep ball like the Manchester City of last season, don’t think any tactically drilled team can stop you 9 out of 10 times. Tactics weren’t Arsene’s major strengths either. He relied on building a quality team and letting them play. The problems for him started when his youth policy deserted him and he had no money to fall back on either. Still getting into Top 4 consistently was a major achievement imo. Very rarely do tactical coaches win titles. It’s a quality team that wins 8 times out of 10. Think one of his other biggest undoings was his failure to produce any consistent number of quality players from his youth setup. Think that hurt him the most, and unability to unearth hidden gems, which was one of his biggest trademarks.

And by tactical vs non tactical coaches, I mean coaches who rely on rigid team structures vs coaches who let their teams express themselves.

Not for me tactically his Emirates years basically tell you how we fell away by measuring it in Europe.
Defensively and midfield wise we were unable to absorb pressure.
Wenger clearly ignored the opposition by trying to concentrate on his own side with the ball.
That’s all very noble but we had no plan or composure without it. Suicidal outlook in the end.

Negative Net Spend - 2004-2014 - even post-Ozil we were still negative net spend

Its not about how much you spend. Wenger has always been known to be very frugal in fact.

It is partly about how much you investment, in fact the most successful sides have generally always been the biggest spenders. Our greatest success coincided with our comparatively highest levels of investment.
