Good interview

I actually miss Arsene as our manager. Would love him to be at our games, especially at home.

And I really hope he sees us win something big soon. That would be the perfect way to say thank you to the boss.

Fergie being present at every United home game after retirement brought a negative effect on their managers. Personally I feel a big manager should stay away from the club after retirement for the sake of the club.

I wish he was at the club, even if he’s just a brand ambassador.
We’ve moved on from his management days so this won’t be like Man Utd with Fergie watching over them every home game.

I don’t miss being unprepared every start of the season the embarrassing scorelines etc. Loved early Wenger years but the last seasons of his career here i couldnt wait for him to go it was beyond frustrating.

This too.

I remember being one of very few on OA who was calling for him to resign way back in 2009/2010. Used to get abused all the time on here for that

Truth be told, I didn’t understand what was going on in the club behind the scenes regarding the stadium, selling our best players to keep afloat etc.

But our transfer business was absolutely shocking for about 15 years, selling our best and buying dross to replace them. :disappointed:

Only from 2014 to 2018 did we start signing players with real pedigree. Not including that 2016 transfer window — that was pathetic.

I agree, it was so frustrating watching him flounder in his last few seasons, especially in the transfer market, then seeing the club fall behind our rivals because he’d lost the edge he had when he first came to the club.

The reason Arteta has made such a difference is because he’s ruthless and acting with urgency rather than the arrogance and complacency we had with Wenger.

Please guys, It’s an unveiling of a statue meant to signify the great Wenger days. We can stick to that and enjoy whatever great memories you may have about the guy.

Let’s not fill this thread with old conversation points & deteriorate the experience.

It’s a great moment and we can be adults for a few days.

Seems to me like there’s a very adult discussion going on here about the failings of Wenger. I see no problem with that and no reason why anyone should try to police the discussion.

Sure very adult.
I don’t find it an adult behavior to be unable to curb your tendency to criticise Wenger for sometime, especially when a statue is unveiled for him.

Can people, who click on Wenger thread for these few days, expect the thread to have some material around it (and better yet, his interview) and not another series of useless conversation around his failings?

No need to police the conversation but I do think people who can’t stay away from their urge to put a negative spin on a positive day are lowlives.
You can tell me that this doesn’t justify policing sure but don’t try to spin this as a mature discussion.

I don’t want to spoil the experience of other posters so this is my last post on this topic.

I just choose to remember him for all the good he did for this club. He wasn’t perfect, made some strange decisions, almost seemed like he had lost the plot at times in the second half of his tenure but I’ll always remember him for his highs, of which there were many.

The day Wenger stepped down, the day we should let go.
The day Arsenal put up a Wenger statue, the day we forgive and forget.

Just celebrate this gentleman’s success and all good memories one more time.

Just a reminder what Wenger was having work with and up against. Crazy numbers.

Famously, there were no big spending Premier League teams other than Manchester United before 2013.

??? Did this guy miss what Chelsea and City did?

Ferguson wasn’t afraid of competition, his health got in the way.

While our ‘net spend’ is good, we just going to ignore it became that way because all our players from the original youth project wanted to leave?

Wage bill + transfer spend is the most accurate measure of a club’s spending power.

We broke even on transfers which is a minor miracle, but our wage bill was always in the top four highest. That is never taken into account. Nevertheless, you had the likes of United and Chelsea who were spending fortunes on fees and wages.

Anyway, Arsène did a magnificent job for this football club. Can’t be arsed to debate the intricacies of it these days. Love the old bastard.

He was being sarcastic, the table he then shares is designed to demonstrate that there were big spending teams before 2013.

Last paragraph is exactly where I’m at with it.
Love the man and will be forever grateful for the memories of invincibles, Henry, extending Bergkamp’s career, pires/Ljunberg on the wings, enticing Sol Campbell from the shit hole down the road, beating Tottenham year after year, going toe to toe with United when no one else could, The Emirates, standing in the stands at Old Trafford like christ the redeemer, battles with Mourinho, keeping us mostly relevant on a tight as fuck budget, playing some of the best football I’ve ever seen, keeping us record FA Cup winners, sliding down that water slide whilst on holiday… The man is a legend and I look at him with great fondness like I would a grandfather.
