I wasn’t around in the 80’s but I’d like to think that Arsenal fans had context and standards back then too.
I don’t understand this fascination with hailing Ramsey as some sort of monumental player in our recent history. If anything he’s more of a microcosm in that he’s forgettable and usually couldn’t hack it when the going got tough.
I’ll have to take your word for it but like I say context is everything. Contextually in the here and now what Ramsey done wasn’t that special. How many people praised Arteta for coming in and winning the FA Cup instantly? Same kind of the thing.
Yes the favour of the FA Cup has fallen and the expectations for this club are higher but I really don’t see it like we won those trophies just because of Ramsey, or Arteta for that matter. Auba last year absolutely. Even then he’s not legend status for me either.
I am not sure if this is shifting goal post or not.
My argument is, if we consider Henry and Bergkamp as Arsenal legend… do you think Ramsey is on par with them, standing shoulder to shoulder side by side?
If we were to list Arsenal legends as a definitive strata of ex players then those you’ve mentioned would come into it. (Henry, Bergkamp and a whole host of others from the echelons of time)
It’s debatable whether Ramsey falls into that category or the strata just below ‘Legend’ (which is the ‘He was a Bloody Good Servant for us!’ group of players)
Y’all already know how I feel about Ramsey. I’d only take him back on loan with his wages heavily subsidised.
Only play Ramsey once a week in a ‘load management’ type setting. Maybe priorities those away games as Ramsey was typically one of our better performers in those fixtures. You can’t play him 2/3 times a week.
