Yes, he never said 2005. That’s when Punk went to WWE and it can’t possibly be that period because Punk wouldn’t be able to demand to use Cult of Personality, and we know he used This Fire Burns instead.
I mean, it’s not surprising they want to own as much as possible of the IP that they use.
But he first went to WWE in 2005. Not sure how that’s hard to understand. Plus he used Cult of Personality in ROH before he signed with WWE.

That was towards the end. He didn’t end up using Cult Of Personality when he first went to WWE.
He switched to that in 2011 when he returned. We know one of the conditions for him renewing at the time was that he would get his own music.
So what Corey is talking about is either 2011 or 2023. I think the fact that he says first, he probably means 2011. I don’t think he was even aware of Punk using his music in ROH before that, probably wasn’t even aware who Punk is too. 
Tbh, when I first read it I thought he was talking about the latest return because they ended up remastering the song which is mediocre compared to the OG one.

The highlighted part implies to me that he got his way, which we know he wouldn’t in 2006, so that’s why I think he must be referencing 2011.
Read your tweet you posted man. Punk first signed in 2006. He used Cult of Personality before that in ROH. He wanted to use it when he jumped ship but got told no.

Yeah, I’m saying Corey got the period wrong and he didn’t specify about what year he was talking about.
I’m pretty positive he was talking about 2011 when Punk had put it in his contract that he would use Cult Of Personality and he did.

One thing that I’ll give to that theory is that he did keep his name(during a time where indy guys didn’t keep their names) but if I recall correctly that’s because nobody cared enough about him to change it and they didn’t think he’ll make it far anyway.
If he did demand Cult of Personality in 2005 then fair play to him, adds more to his legacy.
