With my life, yes.
Can’t remember where I saw it recently or which club it was (starting to think I’ve imagined it tbf) but I’m sure there was a signing in the last few weeks where the player got a contract that rose accordingly with performances each year.
I know we don’t see the finer workings of contracts and it’s probably much more complicated than the ‘300k pw’ shite that gets into the media but I’ve always thought more deals should be structured in this way.
E.g
Saliba signs new deal
Year 1: 120k
Year 2 (assume performance goals and apps met): 150k
Year 3: 175k
Year 4: 200k
Tbh it’s just the old ‘yearly wage rise’ on FM but attached to performance. Of course agents are gonna make that difficult but was quite glad to see that happen once recently.
Exactly
Hard to attach “performance clauses” in football i reckon… what exactly do you use as triggers? Team GA? He’s got the leverage atm and if he bets on himself to do well next year, we are truly f*d if he does.
Its too bad we seem to have gotten to this place with him. Only hope is that he genuinely likes AFC and Arteta and his mates and would like to stay, so its just a matter of finding the right compromise.
Been thinking about Saliba’s contract situation - what should we do this summer?
- Agree to Saliba’s wage demands and offer him a new contract
- Carry on negotiations over the summer, but if nothing is agreed, gamble by allowing Saliba to go into his last year of his contract and risk him leaving on a free
- If no new contract is agreed, sell Saliba and reinvest by signing Joao Cancelo as a new RB and play Ben White at CB
- OR - None of the Above…I have complete confidence that Saliba will agree Arsenal’s contract offer

I’d lean towards option 3, but without the Cancelo part, so decided not to vote.
I honestly can’t see the club going into the season with his contract not renewed. That’s a big asset we would be willing to lose for free.
I think we’ll either come to an agreement for a short extension and find a middle ground for the wages. If that doesn’t happen I think the club will look to sell him.
Judging fro what has been mentioned, it does sound like the club is confident that they can retain him. I do feel that won’t affect the plans much on the defender recruitment. I think once Rice(or whoever his alternative is done), the defender will then take priority. It’s actually the area we’ve heard most of the rumours so far, with Guehi, Tapsoba, Simakan, Sutalo, Boey and Cancelo.
Saliba’s signing stop wetting urselves
I’d echo what Clive Palmer mentioned on the Arsenal vision podcast.
Keep calm, he knows the EPL is the place to be, he’s at a club that will raise his profile and there’s still plenty of time for him to switch to one of Europe’s bigger clubs but an EPL medal will help him get a big move later on.
If he doesn’t re-sign then he isn’t the sort of player we want here. We’ll cash in and invest in someone else.
It doesn’t matter if he’s right, I find Clive Palmer impossible to listen to. He has a habit of talking about basic things like he’s the only person ever to think of them.
I’ll agree he’s not a hugely insightful person to listen to but the rest sounds like something you’ve built up yourself. It’s people around Clive who seem to defer to him as the voice of wisdom as opposed to him having an ego about it for me. Just says what he thinks and lots of people tend to like it/agree.
Oh we all have people in media we can’t stand to listen to. It’s not always completely rational. His way of talking about football does just grate on me.
Haha that’s fair. In a similar vain I can’t listen to their podcast because Elliot.
Clive is Clive, he explains his position. I think he’s an intelligent fella, hint of smugness though. I agree with him sometimes, other times I don’t. It’s good to hear a lot of different opinions and takes on things.
I even watch AFTV even though that feels like Match of the Day for 5 year olds. Lee Gunner is the only Gooner podcaster I ignore because he’s an utter t*t.
I think my issue with him is that he often doesn’t explain his position. He’ll say “it was a game where people hid” but doesn’t say who hid or what they specifically did which is just like, come on man, don’t weasel out.
I’ll on the look out for that now.
I mean, it’s a silly gripe for me to have but I do genuinely enjoy listening to their pod. Elliot is very American if that makes sense, so I understand why people find that kind of manic energy hard to listen to. But it’s a reliable source of Arsenal content that gets me through six to seven miles depending on runtime so I can’t complain too much.
Fast cunt.
Only gets me through 800m on a good day.
I’m not useful for anything other than middle endurance events. We all have our niche.
My niche is pizza, wine, and procrastinating over track events.
