What was the last book you read?

War and Peace.

Not bad, expected it to be better.

Started reading Fourth Wing on the wife’s request that I do. Rate bloody good so far.

Just started reading the final empire, best book I’ve read in a while

Enjoy, it’s such a good series and filled with really good concepts/lore.

Been on a Len Deighton tip lately. Listened to Berlin Game, Mexico Set and London Match recently and have thoroughly enjoyed them.

Think I’ll buy The Ipcress File next.

I should try these. I’m a big fan of the spy novel genre but never read Len Deighton for some reason.

I just finished A Spy Alone by Charles Beaumont, pretty good for a contemporary spy novel.

Ever read the books, but enjoyed the Michael Caine movies.

@Cristo @Sol have you both tried Fourth Wing (The Empyrean Series)?

It’s not something I would normally grab myself as it has a big romance arc to it (a bit foggin spicy too) but the world, lore and characters are really, really good. One of my wife’s recommendations but I’ve sped through all three available books recently.

Worth a read.

I’ve been wanting my wife to read fantasy/sci-fi for ages but she’s just always read the type of non-fiction books she thinks you’re supposed to read which ends up with her never reading them.

A few of my friends partners have been into the romantasy/fairy smut for a while now, and I was dismissive but eventually got to the point where if the genre could act as a gateway drug for my wife to maybe progress to stuff like ASOIAF and WOT, then I’d be ok with it.

So I got her the first book in the fourth wing series and she fucking loved it, she thought it was absolutely banging and finished the first three in no time. I’ve literally never seen her read like that before lol

She says they are genuinely quite good, and I’ve been on the look out for a new series after finishing the excellent ā€œChildrenā€ trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky, so I’ve promised her I’ll start the first book in the next few days when I get a chance.

Dragons, elves etc are not a hard pitch to me so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it haha

The smut is probably just directed more to the female gaze but that’s fine with me, I don’t mind reading about some guy with big forearms and hands manhandling some little elfling haha

Haha my wife is so big into the romantasy stuff that this was the perfect gateway for me to read something she enjoyed. I think it simply has a great balance of that sort of stuff as well as appeasing other elements that are typical of a fantasy novel.

I definitely get where you wife is concerned, and mine was shocked by how fast I read these books too! It’s a real page turner, every chapter is left on a mini-cliffhanger and the pacing is really ā€˜fast’ compared to a lot of other fantasy novels I have read. I’m in the middle of finishing The Inheritance Cycle, which is great story wise, but does drag in parts of the book. There will be pages filled with how the character is training a skill or something and it waffles on like that. Whereas Fourth Wing gives you those concise details and cracks on with the rest of the story.

I hate to big something up like this but I certainly think it’s worth your time either way.
