Great trailer. Friday is big for modern gaming.
Good lord that looks intense.
Basically a new Dark Souls type game?
Soulsbornes are a dime a dozen these days, this is meant to be the next evolution in the genre. I geniunely can’t wait. Bet it’s going to be shit.
I’m doing what I have been doing the past decade whenever FROM release a game: I make a low effort attempt at faking my own death and food prep for several days.
If people call me anyway to yap about their lives I whisper curses back at them until they hang up. It never works though tbh, I suspect they only talk and never listen so they probably don’t notice.
No idea how to dodge work the first couple of days next week, any suggestions? what is your roadmap like.
Wtf?
I’ve actually been planning to have a few beers on Thursday night when we twat Wolves.
Win or lose I’m starting to think it might be a weekend game for me.
I suppose by that point it will be known as a pisswatered soulsborne
I say that but I really want day 1 action
Looks awesome, villains/NPCs on the scale and creativity of GoW and then Witcher / Dark Souls open world, RPG gameplay.
Superb trailer but so often the real thing disappoints.
Elden Ring getting phenomenal reviews.
Would love if co-op was easier to set up, i.e. ‘invite a friend’ as opposed to needing to hunt/scavenge a little to craft summoning items.
Elden Ring looks beautiful. Gonna have to invest some time into it
Elden Ring coming in with some unreal metacritic scores right now, seems like it’s one of the few games that’s lived up to the hype. Anybody played it yet?
Yeh man it’s pretty incredible. Runs like a dream on the PS5 with very reasonable loading times given the expanse of the map.
Any Soulsborne fans are going to want to check it out, for new players to the franchise it may be a little daunting at first but the open world is rich and purposeful- with the added bonus that a little grind can narrow the difficulty level between bosses.
I probably haven’t been this immersed in an open world since The Witcher 3. It does some things better and some things worse but so far I’m having a blast.
I’ll expand a little more on why as someone who notoriously doesn’t like open worlds I’m finding this game a breath of fresh air. I know there are a lot of hype reviews out there and they’re rarely trust worthy. I won’t spoil anything with these ramblings.
There are two reasons I’m glad I paid £50 for this last week, first it respects the players time and second their intelligence.
Traveling in this game is delight, you press a button to call your horse and your on his back instantly because he’s a spectral horse. None of that 17 minutes to exit a camp RDR2 horseshit. You can acquire plants and items really fast, simply press triangle, you don’t even have to get off your horse. Wanna fast travel? No problem there are points littered everywhere on the map. I geniunely think this game highlights the viability of open world on the next generation, on horseback you’ll rarely see a loading screen at all and the SSD and over all power of the PS5 means when you do see a loading screen you barely even have time to look at your phone.
Secondly this is a game that isn’t going to hold your hand. Soulsbornes by design are meant to make seasoned gamers feel like filthy casuals while they attempt to git gud. The combat is fantastic for an open world, better than The Witcher and in a different world completely to Skyrim. Brevity is a factor in most Soulsborne’s narratives but this one is a tiny bit more fleshed out. Saying that most of exploration will be through listening to brief NPCs and studying the topography of the map. Also to add true immersion you can kill almost anyone and anything and lock yourself out of stories. I had to restart my first 30 minutes because I like the first merchant and locked myself out of items- I should have known better.
Other hints are provided in notes left by other players, it has a quasi-mmo feel as you can see spectres from other players games. The notes will read “treasure ahead,” “try fire,” etc, it’s a really useful feature that removes the isolated feeling of a long single player campaign. My personal favourite so far was “time for pickle” as the dudes character pretends to dry hump a kneeled over corpse.
You’re very much in control of your own destiny in this narrative, I’ve spent 4 hours defeating a boss and walked away from monsters in 4 seconds because I don’t want to lose my runes. It’s not a Soulsborne if you don’t have at least a few fights that leave you wanting to hang yourself from your controller lead. For new players however this can easily be negated by a few days grinding and exploring. Levels and gear come fast, naturally and organically. But yes there will be jank and you will die from jank and you will cry from jank deaths while your runes dissolve into oblivion.
Although I personally enjoyed Bloodborne’s Lovecraftian aesthetic more this is a tremendous game, not just an evolution in the Soulsborne genre but perhaps a mark in the evolution of what next generation titles can be. FromSoftware have done an amazing job and for everything to work so perfectly week 1 is truly refreshing. No matter what anyone thinks the West just can’t hold a candle to the Japanese when it comes to video game development. The only place to go from here is further enhancements into the multiplayer facets of the game. You can tell it’s been a real priority in this instalment, ultimately it will be game over when they finally make a true Soulsborne MMO.
Max Dood hit the nail on the head about this game. This is gonna be the new trendsetter for open world games like Skyrim and BOTW.
Despite all the bugs and issues, this game’s depth is insane and somehow it keeps being fresh and not repetitive.
The fight for GOTY will be wild this year. Horizon, Elden Ring, God Of War, Forspoken, Saints Row, BOTW 2, Starfield, etc.
This year is freaking packed, and I feel sorry for the games who now have to follow Elden Ring.
Oh yes! I’ve been waiting on this forever.
I’ll definitely give it a go. Managing a team on F1 appeals more to me than Football Manager tbh. Hope it’s good.
I’ve played it on two different generations (360 and Xbox 1) and feel like enough of a mug already, when I do get a PS5 at some point in the distant future, Rockstar can get fucked if they think I’m buying this game for a third time.
Yeah I’m so tempted but already feel mugged off enough. PS4 owners should have got a free PS5 update ffs.
Think I’ll pass.
Rockstar are just a trash company these days. I’m going to avoid their work until they do something original. Don’t think I’d even play a new Grand Theft Auto at this point, everything they do is boring and predictable.
