Splinter Cell > Metal Gear

I bought a PS Vita recently second hand for like seventy quid or something. Partly to stop me spunking 280 quid on a Switch when Mario Kart is basically the only game I want to play, partly so I could play the Uncharted game released on it, and the first two God of War games that got ported. Oh, and so I could download the PS One Metal Gear, which sadly hasn’t held up well, the shooting mechanics are appalling to the modern player (remains a problem up until the third metal gear(?) , the one in the jungle)

I also thought maybe it might open my mind a bit to accepting PlayStation back into my life. Cos atm I’m gonna buy the new Xbox, but I’m not even entirely sure why, aside from familiarity and the superior controller lol

Spies V Mercs is one of the best multiplayer modes out there.
I disagree about Metal Gear not holding up though I’ve replayed it loads and it still awesome. I think the limitations of the platform or what probably don’t hold up more than anything as pretty much all shooters on the PS1 had horrible Resident Evil style shooting.

But then again if you’re shooting loads in MGS1 you’re playing the game wrong.

I always found Metal Gear more engrossing story wise etc.

But always found learning the correct route and picking people off more fun in Splinter Cell.

Splinter Cell also taught me what an Azerbaijani was.

Though I am talking Circa 2000-2005 era.

Japense games are always way more entertaining story wise than their North American counter parts because they are batshit crazy. Stuff Kojima was doing in MGS1 was way ahead of it’s time. Pyscho Mantis reading your memory card and having to switch your controller into port 2 so he couldn’t read your moves. Awesome.

I did like that Splinter Cell Conviction? though, the one that was a bit darker than the others.

Mate I got to the bit where you have the first big unavoidable shootout, after the DARPA chief dies and you rescue Meryl, and it was so frustrating. The shooting mechanics were such dogshit I just put the game down for a bit.

I just said Splinter Cell over Metal Gear, I clearly like stealth games, I don’t try to play them like shooters lol. It’s just that the ā€œfirstā€ Metal Gear has aged horribly in that particular respect, surely that’s fairly inarguable. I swear it then took at least three more games for them to achieve modern shooting and camera mechanics?

I adore the Metal Gear on the ps one, but I adore how good it was then, how good it was for the time. However I replayed the first few Splinter Cell games in the past few years and they all basically held up. There is no game I’d like to see get released before a new Splinter Cell game.

Though I will say that Sons of Liberty is a ridiculously good looking game for the PS2, that’s a game that hadn’t aged too badly.

All personal preference at the end of the day. Have you played Mark of the Ninja? I think you’d like it. Suspect you’re aware of it already tbh.

I had to check this as I didn’t remember off the top of my head but MGS-1 came out in 1998 for the PS1 and Splinter Cell came out in 2002 for the PS2. Metal Gear 2 was 2001 for the PS2 and it did have down the sights aiming from what I remember. So yeh I do think it was a generational thing more than anything. I still remember Resi 1 having the most terribly frustrating survival horror controls ever, but for me when I replay I don’t mind as it’s all part of the charm of the PS1 which was already pushing so many boundaries for gaming.

So maybe a little harsh to compare the play-ability of both as 4 years is a long time in gaming. But I appreciate your controversial stand in liking Splinter Cell over MGS. Very The Shield over The Wire.

I actually have never heard of Mark of the Ninja? Was it PS1? I go through a phase of running emulators from time to time so may have to check it out.

No, no. I fully accept that they were different generations, MGS one and Splinter Cell. I guess I’m kind of comparing but not intentionally trying to just draw a direct comparison and proclaim one to be better than the other.

But while MGS 2 had the fps view, the third person shooting and camera mechanics still aren’t great. Graphically it holds up very, very well, but it still has its flaws. As I feel the third MGS does. To be clear, I’d choose to compare Splinter Cell to MGS 2, and I think it’s better.

I’m comparing all three of these games to the first two or three Splinter Cellls, and saying that the Splinter Cell games hold up better. IMO, of course.

So I’m not just comparing PS2 to PS1, I’m comparing several titles, most of which were the same generation. For sure it’s unfair to compare the first Splinter Cell on Xbox and latterly PS2 to a ps one game.

Mark of the Ninja is an indie game, you can get it on your console of choice. It’s an aesthetically pleasing 2D stealth platformer. At least check out a bid on YouTube or something, I think it’s a bit of a hidden gem.

Horee shet. MGS is one of best games of all time.

Regarding the consoles, I’ve owned every Playstation and Xbox as both have their pros and cons and both have excellent exclusives. Also whilst growing up I had a mix of friends online on both platforms.

Have to say I loved the Xbox360. I had a chipped one and was able to download and burn my own games, two weeks earlier than release to boot. Literally had CD wallets full of games. What a time to be alive.

I remember when I used to care about all that console wars fanboy did, when I was 11 years old.

Now I’m just glad that great games like Yakuza (speaking of @Cristo how you enjoying them?) are multi platform meaning maximum potential sales and more cool games for everyone to enjoy.

Third party games should always be available on all platforms.

What should decide which console you go for should be the first party exclusives.

And personally Forza aside, Xbox doesn’t have anything that interests me. They used to with the 360 and Ninja Gaiden PGR, mass effect etc.

But now? I mean when are people gonna be bored by another halo, or another shooter? But then there are some for which that’s what they want.

But @JakeyBoy you want to play all those games so you but an Xbox and then stick with an Xbox, you’re playing yourself.

But finally, I can get being splinter cell being better then mgs.

I don’t disagree. I’m just saying it doesn’t play well now, in my opinion. When did you last play it?

Probably 15 years ago

That’s what I mean. Cos I’ve gone with Xbox the past two generations and rinsed the back catalogues for the games I wanna play, I’m now looking at the PlayStation exclusives and feeling I could possibly have made the wrong choice. So for the next gen I’m wondering which way to go, but admittedly do have this urge to continue with xbox that I’m questioning.

Yeah so the replacement 360 they sent me then burnt out as well :joy: :joy:

Then I got an Xbox 360 Elite and that last me but I still went through 3 Xbox 360s haha

But yeah I really agree that PS has the much better exclusives, though the period I had a 360 was when all the Gears of War and Mass Effect games came out which were all super epic.

That’s the thing, if you want to champion the Xbox 360 the only answer you can have for the RRoD counter argument is ā€œI guess it didn’t affect me :man_shrugging:ā€

Its more than enough to ruin a console in someone’s eyes and cause unswerving allegiance to the PlayStation lol.

Just seen your post and this sums it up for me really well.

Yeah and I think there’s a bit of nostalgia in it for me as well. I grew up playing FIFA 97 and Tomorrow Never Dies on the original PS.

Does anyone else remember that sick indoor 5-a-side game mode in FIFA 97??

I’m with you on Splinter Cell though - I never got into MGS, but Splinter Cell was my JAM.

God I fucking loved being a sneaky cunt. What a voice Michael Ironside has.

Don’t man.

Look at this:

And look at the last of us 2.

I’m not being pedantic, cos I don’t remember if FIFA 97 had it too, but I can’t begin to explain how many hours I spent on the 5 aside mode on FIFA 98.
