Unpopular football opinions

Bring back the golden goal I loved that

Naaaaah.

You wouldn’t have had the finest Extra Time in history ever when Arsenal went to Sampdoria if that was the case.

(Mind you, this is the unpopular opinion thread so I can see where you’re coming from lol)

I just loved the tension of the whole thing, just doing that thing when you’re holding the back of your head the whole time having heart palpitations, maybe it’s just me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I always thought it represented the whole emotions of the game in a unique moment. Ecstasy and tragedy on and off the pitch. Loved it.

Remember it at Euro 96, Gazza an inch away from glory

:grin:that’s what you get when you don’t look after your body properly.

If you don’t have an explicit or implied family connection to a football club, you should always primarily support your local. End of, no exceptions

What is your address?

I remember in primary school most of the kids supported Man U as they were the best at the time, which makes sense for a little kid

this is fine I reckon as long as you don’t change as you get older, you can pick whatever team you like tbh as long as you’re honest about why you support them

I don’t support Millwall for a variety reasons.

Lots of people hate where they grew up.

I get where you’re coming from, everyone hates a bandwagoner. But at the same time, football is global and so it’s unavoidable.

To add to this, we don’t really have anything in my country that is like what you see throughout Europe in terms of football.

But I get it because when I was growing up, it always pissed me off that most people supported either Man Utd or Chelsea because they were the two best sides at the time.

I’d get shit whenever Arsenal choked (which was a lot) from dudes who basically just decided to support a good team whereas I obviously supported Arsenal because of my old man/grandfather. Tbh I grew up a rugby guy and thought soccer sucked until I was about 11 or so lol

But yeah I get where youre coming from cos nowadays I meet a lot of City fans over here and its obviosuly just because theyre good and it annoys me lol

NZ right?

Going to be interesting to have a whole generation of kids bandwagoning City.

Lots of people going to resent that family connection if that family members a bad influence.
Sometimes it’s just important for the individual to have their own thing.
A bit like fashion or music it just gives them their own identity.

Growing up in Wimbledon when I was 4-10, I supported Wimbledon FC because it was my local team and the only club I would go see live and Man Utd because of Peter Schmeichel.

When I moved in 2000, I kind of fell out of love with football and stopped watching it on tv but carried on playing for a youth club.

It wasn’t until around 2007 that I got back into watching football on tv and I remember it being a crazy Man City vs West Ham (Tevez and Mascherano era) game that got me back into the Prem while I was bored and home alone one day.

That one game sparked something in me and I started watching all the Sky games every weekend and decided that I wanted to follow a specific team. At this point AFC Wimbledon weren’t even in League 2 yet, so not exactly easy to follow from abroad so I decided to go for a club with a high profile Danish player which at that time was Bendtner at Arsenal (basically the only Danish player in the PL at the time lol).

In fairness to me, you definitely can’t call me a fair weather fan considering it’s pretty much been suffering and Banter Era since 2007/08 and I’ve always stood by Arsenal and watched 90% of games since then (although 4 FA Cups has been awesome and it could have been a lot worse - see Spurs or Newcastle or ahh myriad of useless teams).

I grew up in South London and my pops and brothers are Chelsea fans. I’m aware of the whole Woolwich Arsenal connection but that’s not a connection anyone born in the 90s would genuinely be able to feel.

So in other words I don’t agree with this. I chose Arsenal because I saw Dennis Bergkamp play some time around 1995/96 season and just absolutely loved the colour of the Arsenal kit and also because they won whatever game it was I was watching.

No real special reason but that connection has never faded.

Just don’t think location means much it’s just that local fans will have a better understanding of what a certain club may mean / do in that local community. And you’re also much more likely to be surrounded by Arsenal fans if you live in Islington and you can appreciate the history of the club scattered everywhere.
