Unai Emery

Let’s not forget Emery has had two big jobs, PSG and Arsenal, his stints at both jobs were underwhelming. He’s just not a coach for the big clubs. But you can’t really fault his career either. What he has achieved, and is achieving with Villa, is remarkable.

Because smaller clubs rarely have big names and big egos.

What did he do at Villareal in the league? two 7th place finishes. Pretty underwhelming. Also when you consider his football is trash to watch.

He was dealing with general dysfunction at those places and there wasn’t much alignment between senior management and the coaching staff which affected his ability to build his ideal side.

Villa definitely have given him the keys and a lot of control, and its clearly paying off.

He’s a top coach no doubt. Getting Villa back into the CL in this environment deserves coach of the year

Reckon United will try and go for him.

You didn’t like conceding 600 shots to Watford?

People say that Emery failed at PSG and Arsenal, but who hss been a success at PSG? Bar a refereeing scandal, he’d have knocked Barca and MSN out of Europe in brutal fashion. Arsenal haven’t won a European title in three decades. He brought us to a final.

Would like to see him at one of the Madrid teams. He deserves it.

…and me, I was gutted when Arsenal got rid of him.

Considering the Scallie Gerrard nearly got them relegated he has worked wonders.

It would be interesting to know what Emery would have achieved if he’d have had the same sort of investment and support that the board gave Arteta.

I don’t believe he would have had us where we are now - I think he has struggled with big ego’s at Arsenal and at PSG - I also think Arteta is better at getting potential signings to buy into his vision

I agree that Arteta is better but Emery took over a club that Wenger had left in complete disarray and complacency was everywhere.

Our best players were earning ridiculous wages but were under performing and the whole team needed a complete overhaul yet he was never given the same support Arteta has had.
Also Emery bought Tierney, Leno, Martinelli and Saliba, who were decent signings, so to get fifth place and the final of the EL, was better than Arteta did in his first season here.

and for what it’s worth… I don’t think the GK situation would’ve unfolded with Emery the way it has with Arteta.

He essentially ripped through: Leno > Martinez > Ramsdale > Raya… and none have really worked/kept their place under Arteta across 4.5 years.

Maybe I’m looking through rose-tinted glasses, but I don’t see what Ramsdale or Raya offers that’s better than Martinez other than maybe… claiming crosses? :grimacing:

That’s probably more significant first team GK changes in all the seasons Wenger was here. :grinning:

agreed lol, if my memory serves correct - Wenger’s last few keepers were:

Lehmann > Almunia > Szczesny > Cech > Leno across about ~15 years lol (that said, Wenger really should’ve moved on from Almunia years ago)

I wonder how long Raya will last before we get another

Edit: TIL Leno was an Emery signing

I’ll never forgive Wenger for persisting with Almunia :joy:

Some of the revisionism going on in here is mad.

Emery also wanted N’Zonzi to lead our midfield.

There’s a reason why Barca and the two Madrid teams have never gone for him and that’s based on his history.

By no means a poor manager/coach but elite enough to manage big teams? We’ve not seen it yet.

I don’t know about that one. Szcesny wasn’t a world beater but Almunia was a complete liability.

A midfield of Nzonzi, Banega and Perisic. About as dynamic as one of those Easter Island statues.
