UEFA Europa League

Are we away first?

Doesn’t really matter when its at both our stadiums mate

Kinda does. Whoever is away second still potentially gets the extra half hour for the away goal. It’s not often that comes into force I know, but still.

These were the teams when they played in 2007. It’ll be a stark contrast this time round.

When they played in 2005, both teams were even better.

The lineups were even more unreal.

Champions League = Bayern
Europa = Olympiacos

Dont seem to get away from these opponents. come to think of it we couldn’t seem to get away from olympiacos in the CL either when they were in the CL either.

We’re ‘home’ first

Olympiacos…AGAIN :expressionless:

Yep, 2005 is the best Milan team I’ve seen as an adult. We didn’t get out of second gear and controlled two games 1-0 home and away against united, they didn’t stand a chance. Put them fully in their place.

Milan in 2005 losing to Liverpool is the greatest travesty. They could replay that game a hundred times and that result would never happen again.

Pure scouse grit, determination and will pulled through that night.

I can watch that first half performance on repeat. Prime Crespo was a joy to watch, such a shame that they seemingly lost their their heads at half time and Liverpool found something from absolutely no where.

Gerrard diving and a goal for 4-0 called offside incorrectly as I recall.

Still Milan shouldn’t have crumbled like that.

Only good thing in retrospect is Pirlo says he has nightmares about it, so maybe it was worth it after all.

A still can’t get my head around a 6th seperate season facing Olympiacos since the 09/10 season.

All in all though I shouldn’t complain, we’re actually favourites and if someone said we’d be in the round of 16 draw with half and hour to play last night I wouldn’t have given a rats arse who we got paired with.

Olympiacos are the Europa League Bayern Munich

In the end Olympiacos are probably one of the worst clubs left, along with Dinamo Zagreb, Molde, and maybe 1-2 others. Its boring to play them again and there’s a bit of a PTSD factor after last year but it should be a good draw just from the perspective of getting through.

We should be looking at a final 8 with only two good opponents left (Spurs and United/Milan) that could plausibly be favorites against us.* Basically, assuming we beat Olympiacos we then will have like a 70% shot of needing to beat an inferior opponent to get to the semi-final. Not bad.

*I actually think we would be favorites over Spurs right now given they are such a mess. United would be deserved favorites over us. Not really sure about Milan.

We have a weird record against them. We win one tie and lose the reverse one.

For the first three of those years for whatever reason we kept playing them on the last matchday of the CL groups (I think maybe this had something to do with us being in Pot 1 at that point) when the result didn’t really matter. I’m pretty sure we had clinched first in the group in 2009 and 2011 and had at least clinched advancement in 2012.

I think the only “real” loss (ie, when we played a strong team and it mattered) we had to them before last year was in 2015. But then we avenged it in a must win on the last matchday.

I reckon Roma and us would be 50-50, Villarreal we’d probably be a marginal favourite.
