Trolling on Social Media

I’m on IG and FB. FB to keep up with family and old friends and IG because the guitar building community is very active on it.

I have to take exception to “IG is a thirst trap and vanity fest” statements. Yes, that is there and if that’s where you focus your effort… that’s what you’ll see. But there are also some amazing artists, makers, and people on there. Wrighty’s IG is a source of inspiration for me. Japan Blues is some of the best photography around.

It takes almost no effort to curate what you see. But you do have to be conscientious about it.

Came off Facebook years ago
Never been on IG
Will stay on Twitter purely for football and sports

I did that years ago. Hard to quantify, but my mental health definitely got better since.

I missed it for a week or two, but that’s it.

I literally can’t recognise some people identity on social media when I look in.
Men in the 40s Tweeting well done to footballers with flag emojis.
Wtf is that about. He’s not reading the shit dickhead.

I use Instagram and Reddit.

Facebook I deleted years ago. Cesspool of crap.

There’s a use for these things and they can be beneficial but there’s too much downside for me and cultivates to much dross and negativity on the whole.

I use Instagram quite a lot, primarily to help me keep track of my friends many of whom live abroad.

It’s nice getting a window into a friend’s life and seeing how they’re doing and getting on in life without having to formally reach out to them on WhatsApp or whatever and having a stilted conversation about “how are you these days”.

I saw a mate post something on his story the other day that I thought was funny and interesting so I messaged him on the story and it led to us having a conversation for the first time in a while. So I really like Instagram for that, as it helps me maintain my relationships with people I don’t see daily or weekly - which is hugely important to me.

One thing I’ve taught myself to remember is that IG is a highlights reel and not a behind the scenes of someone’s life, and that has helped me in using IG in terms of my mental health.

I don’t follow any influencers or celebrities on IG specifically because fuck that and I don’t care about them.

Twitter is just absolutely horrific and I really don’t get why it’s so popular, I spend 0 time there. Facebook I’ve dropped off massively and literally log in maybe once a week to see if some of my friends who are stuck in the dark ages have tried reaching out to me on there.
