I think Varane would know he’s coming for the bench if he did arrive, I don’t think he’d be against it either tbh. He’s still upgrading massively but would likely want similar wages and that’ll be the issue.
Other than the fact we’ve not bid for him or really rumoured even to be in for him that is…
He’d be absolutely perfect as back up. Our team is crying out for experience at the back. Think he’s about ready for a Saudi move though. Does he start at PSG?
Whilst I’m here, Ramsdale (40m), Soares, El Nenny, Nelson (15m), Vieira (20m) and Nketiah (35m) can go this month.
If it is possible, Tierney comes back and Zinny becomes a midfield option. We sign Sancho (loan with option) and Vlahovic (50m) and a back up goalkeeper - haven’t got a name.
I don’t understand why Varane is considered to be a good option for us as a backup defender. He hasn’t been good enough for Utd, so how can he do a job for Arsenal. His wages alone would be a problem. We need to be making smart moves in the transfer window, not creating more problems.
They are the same defenders that finished last season. They’re still pretty young. We have a Timber, tomiyasu and zinchenko sized gap in the defence.
Not sure how you can compare honours really. Varane has earned just as much in medals. And it’s not like there was any evidence jorginho’s experience helped the young squad anyway.
Jorginho is also a shadow of his euro winning self. He can’t get a start this season!
You need to read posts better as well, because I did mention the wages. And I did lead with that he’d only be a backup.
There’s always the potential that after a year or two we could sell him to Saudi and get ‘over the odds money’ on his name.
You need to read posts better as well. I very clearly outlined why the Jorginho signing was nothing like a potential Varane move.
Of course you are allowed to disagree, but mentioning Tomiyasu and Zinchenko is confusing.
Would I prefer Varane in the squad to Kiwior? Erm, yes. Do I think White, Kiwior and Tomi (in a months time) is enough cover until Timber returns? Erm, yes. Back up centre back is one of our lowest areas of need for me.
The plus with somebody like Varane is he’s been innthe trenches in the Champions League in the knockouts. We haven’t got many of those figures in our squad.
?! I’ll make this my last post on the matter. Not interested in a long drawn out debate.
You initially said “hell no. He’s semi retired.” But then flipped and said “yes, as a backup.” Which is exactly what I suggested! So you clearly didn’t read it properly initially.
I happen to think it’s a very similar signing to jorginho last year. They’re a similar age at a similar stage in their career. Seeing as you were in favour of jorginho, I wondered why you dismissed it so harshly initially. Perhaps if you had read my post properly you wouldn’t have.
And I did read that you think it’s “completely different” to jorginho, but frankly I find that quite far from the truth. Thus I gave my arguments for that case with the appropriate counterpoints and layout you gave yours regarding jorginho.
I don’t think we need him. You do. I’m not sure how we are singing off the same hymn sheet. I think he’s better than Kiwior, but Kiwior is fine for 4th choice cb.
Jorginho was exponentially better than El Nenny and should have helped us over the line last year.
I don’t see signing Varane having a similar impact. Jorginho was hungry and has worked hjs way back into the Italy squad. Plenty of life left.
I don’t want him but would take him. I was happy with Trossard and Jorginho. I’m not sure what you are struggling with.
Seeing as the club is working under FFP limitations and with a defender being seen as a priority, What stopgap fullback do you reckon we may sign this January?
Struggling to see a Jorginho type of opportunity out there.
Perhaps someone like Ben Johnson who’s gonna be a free agent soon and we have looked at in the past could be an option.
We need the squad improvements but ultimately we also need a culture shift which is still a work in progress. This club still just doesn’t have winning DNA.
Last season we win 3 of our final 9 matches with the title on the line.
This season we’ve had a horror December / festive period taking 4/15 points at a pretty important time.
Let’s not start talking about our European record that’s seen us depart the EL to Olympiacos, Villarreal and Sporting Lisbon.
We have him on loan for the season. I’m sure they’d take the money off us before then but if we pay them now before the accounting period ends then what was the point in do in doing the deal that way? Unless it was purely about not being sure about him being the guy, which the evidence doesn’t support.
