I specifically referred to ‘the West’ in my post, rather than Europe, as I was directing most of my frustration towards the US and how they are not helping the situation, and as you say, want to instead step back. In the absence of US support, the rest of Europe need to continue to support Ukraine in every way they can.

I don’t disagree that is a way we could and maybe should have gone.
I can see the reasons we didn’t. To enforce a no fly zone you’d have to shoot down Russian planes and for Putin that’s an absolute gift of a pretext to widen the war into the former Soviet sphere in Eastern Europe.
What is the long-term plan for this war? Only outcome I see is exhausting reserves and it gets to a flashover point (one side over exerts their efforts - likely Russia) and we get pulled into a full scale war.
Is anyone (normal people) really going to fight if it came to it though? Reform voters give it the biggun about ‘Are Country’ but in the same vein, probably plead they cannot be conscripted due to reasons. Young people of the West have no interest in fighting for their respective countries (my guess) because of the state of it all. Do we just nuke the shit out of each other then?
The optics are best when the narrative is plucky Ukraine defending itself against the big bad bully. While we and the rest of NATO remain in the background the invaded country maintains a moral high ground. Putin wants all out war with NATO and has been posturing for that for over 15 years. This current situation is a no-win for Putin, so long as that stupid, senile old duffer Trump doesn’t fuck everything up.
