Fuck me that’s big. Where we live is as Tory as Tory gets.
Wow the Tories got washed here if Kent aren’t down with Tories they’re in deep shit.
I’ll check my local ward results if they’re in.
I feel sorry for anyone who has to live under a Reform County Council.
Highly centralised party approach and combined generally incompetent councillors battling to be a PPC with a brief to “DOGE” the council’s operations and corporate body is a recipe for disaster.
My area went from Tory to Labour in the last election, which hasn’t happened for nearly two centuries. To call it a Tory stronghold would be an understatement.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see it flip to Reform in the next round of elections.
Ramsgate isn’t in yet, but the surrounding areas:
Margate - Reform
Cliftonville - Reform
Broadstairs - Reform
Birchington & Rural - Reform x2
Maidstone South - Reform
Folkstone East - Reform
Hythe West - Reform
Hythe East - Lib Dems
Are lots of these reform candidates first timers? I know the executive do the day to day stuff but a council being ran by inexperienced people is not great.
Where did you find the breakdown ?
Also, that is an absolute mauling.
I checked the local/county websites:
Ramsgate results in, 2x Reform
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/thanet/news/kent-county-council-election-results-for-thanet-323757/
A few are Tory defectors (Think there was Lib Dem defector as well) Most it’s safe to assume are new.
This country is so cooked.
Badenoch and Starmer really need to look themselves in the mirror and understand what it is driving these Reform votes.
At least the Lib Dem’s are stealing votes too, all the labour and Tory voters that are leaving aren’t just going to Reform.
On the plus side they won’t be fining me for swearing so…silver lining?
I think that is very simplistic and while you are right partly, there are a lot more factors than that.
If labour sent sent every Muslim back to their countries of origin, they would still not be popular.
Hindu Indian immigrants and Nigerian Christians would still be here for one.
People don’t necessarily like reform that much. They certainly won’t when they eventually gain power and realise nothing much will be changed by them.
They hate the establishment parties and everything they do and believe in. and they are showing that hatred by voting for the people the establishment hate the most.
At least that’s my read I may be wrong.
I think the gender wars play a part.
The lack of money and shorty economy, social mobility plays a part.
Housing. Green policies. Poor growth. Shitty police and end of social contract.
Low trust society. Elites committing crimes or dumping sewage in rivers yet no consequences.
That is all still a problem of you send every Muslim home.
That is not to say Muslims aren’t pissing off Brits either - the grooming hand scandal has massively pissed people off.
On immigration, Britain let in more people than they could properly integrate. and then Boris opened the floodgates to drive down wages even more and undercut British workers.
Just to back you up a little, while Tories mismanagement of everything finally did them in. Keep in mind what started it all was them having a party while no one else was allowed to do anything. Which showed off everything the political class was all about.
Boris Johnson’s popularity is still in the dumps. (Hopefully it stays there forever).
Yep agreed. That and Mone’s blatant corruption which she has still not had any consequences for.
Meanwhile you can’t get a gp appointment and if you do, it will almost certainly be with a random pretending to be a doctor.
I’m not even convinced Starmer makes it to the next general election. There are lots of local elections coming up in 2026 and if they haven’t improved their standing by then, which I do not believe they will, they’re gonna get fucking cooked, and it’ll be a much bigger deal than this. Possibly throw in a by-election loss if one comes about for any reason, and it starts getting very sticky.
I’m not even going as far as to predict he won’t make the next GE, but in the immediate aftermath of his landslide win the idea that he could be deposed within a couple of years was almost ludicrous. I don’t think it is unthinkable now.
If Labour start cloak and daggering their PMs then they and the Tories are truly identical.
It’s one of the most unattractive things the mainstream parties do. The Tories slithering around trying to unseat every leader they have makes them look like a clown show.
You’re not wrong, but Starmer is never winning another GE, so they’d probably be wise to at least consider it at some point down the line
I’m not convinced fuel payments and benefit cuts are the root cause of the success of Reform.
If you look at the rise of the far right in countries in Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy, the common thread and denominator they all share is rage about Muslim immigrants and crime associated with them.
It’s a shit show, but if Labour and the Tories stop pussyfooting around the topic they can slow Reforms charge.
There’s a good chance we’ll see a Labour and Lib Dem coalition government in 2029 because that’s probably the only way to beat Reform. Unless the Tories enter into a coalition with Reform.
A lot of outlets were doing those “if these votes were a GE this is what the breakdown would be” sort of thing which is a nonsense really but the heartening thing was that a Labour + LD + Green coalition would have 47% of the vote vote as opposed to the 45% that Reform + Con would have.
I think this is just an inevitable reality of modern day politics. It hasn’t really happened too much in Ireland yet but that is in part because leaders have stepped aside. Some because they knew they were cooked and others (such as Leo Varadker) who have just decided to get out of the politics game altogether.
