Bit of a pisstake acting like this is new information that is being “revealed” when we were well aware of this 20bn black hole BEFORE the election.
Ask Michelle Mone for it this year.
‘Can’t pay we’ll take it away’ her yacht and everything else.
The Tory party are absolutely right that they are using this information to eventually justify a bunch of tax hikes and those tax hikes will not go down well given how high our existing tax burden is.
And so it begins…
Can’t wait for another year of no pay rise and less disposable income due to increased tax.
At least we can all celebrate ‘inflation reducing’ like everything isn’t still 25% up at the supermarket compared to 18 months ago.
Unfortunately not many better options abroad otherwise would’ve already moved.
Edit:
Reeves has ruled out changes to income tax, VAT, national insurance and corporation tax – the largest revenue raisers.
Let’s see how long before they go back on this anyway, at least for now only my shares that I’ll get fucked on.
need to raise money from somewhere…
don’t mind my taxes going up if it helps everyone else who needs it.
Yeah i thought people wanted a high tax and spend society?
People trust the adults in Labour!
Then your stance on the child benefit scheme doesn’t make sense.
Surely you’d rather scrap the 2 child cap and benefit all those who need it even if that comes at higher cost to you personally?
You’re right, but I think there’s a lot of areas where that money can go into to help people today. Schools, hospitals, workplaces, nurseries, public services in short. Raising wages for working people in the public sector.
The issue I have with scrapping the 2 child cap is it encourages more people to have more kids when they can’t afford it.
That said, I wouldn’t be against making the cap more lenient and have child benefit available for families most at risk of poverty today.
But it shouldn’t be a free for all, and I would probably defer the 2-child cap & reintroduce it when inflation is down and cost of living has improved.
Fair enough
Any evidence to back this up? Not having a go as I believe logically the same thing (as we discussed before), but it’s a pretty hard thing to prove beyond feeling and I know people will jump on it when you make a comment like that.
that’s true tbh. No evidence besides imaging what the headlines will be on every news station: ‘Govt scraps 2-child benefit cap worth £Bn’. I know a few people personally who will be chomping at the bit for that extra cash
But hopefully they’re in the minority lol.
Though if its a slow progression towards universal basic income… then I’d be more open to it I think.
From what I’ve read my mum is going to get shafted by the reduction to winter fuel payments.
Thanks Labour.

I think I’m more surprised by how surprised people are that taxes will have to go up given the state of the country’s finances after the last 14 years of mismanagement.
Whenever you make big policy decisions, there are always going to be some that are caught in the middle.
Maybe the solution is to have winter fuel payments linked to both benefits and pensions?
I mean, it’s not as if half of this countries gold reserves were sold at a time when gold was at a 20 year low, not only that, but we gave notice of our intention to sell half the reserves further driving the price lower… Ah yes, that was a Labour government.
Don’t let them fool you into thinking that this country being broke didn’t start with them and I couldn’t be further from a conservative supporter but these fuckers are just as bad as the previous government they blame.
I think it’s Labour’s disingenuous “Omg this is so unexpected” routine after an equally disingenuous election campaign where they didn’t admit they would be raising tactics that riles people here.

Can’t ever tax more the cokeheads that stole the money and fucked us.
Why are “tough choices” always forced on those who can’t afford it?
Easiest target.
It’s ok though, because they’re not the Tories.
Because them there peasants won’t do shit.
