Forty-eight percent of Americans have a passport, up from 3% in 1989.
This maybe the reason why.
But it wouldn’t because if Europe were only one nation then it wouldn’t have been able to field all the medal winning athletes from the various smaller countries.
A lot of Americans are quite insular and think because they’re so great anywhere else isn’t worth visiting, although being too fat to fly is another reason.
