What the actual fuck, it’s like you’ve de-aged 8-10 years.

Amazing mate, that’s incredible.

I’m now trying to remember what you looked like when we met mate. What was that, five years ago now at least? I don’t think you were thirtieth birthday party big at all, but you certainly weren’t as trim as you are now.

Really inspiring mate.

Inspiring me to eat all the shit I want that is, cos I’m not quite thirty yet so I know I can eat all the pizza I want and still turn things round again

Haha. I think maybe 4 years rather than 5 and I was probably about halfway between my heaviest weight and where I am now then.

That a solo effort mate. Was this a training schedule being followed for another attempt on Dublin.
That’s some levels of self discipline you got there mate.

Yea was solo. Dublin has been cancelled since May so I hadn’t started that prep yet but I trained for this over 10 weeks or so as was starting from having built up to a half anyway. This was actually attempt 2 as I tried a couple of weeks back but hadn’t got it in me/went out too hard.

Why did you find it harder? I’m always in awe of people who run marathons. I do a lot of cardio but the most I’ve ever ran without stopping is about 20k, at that point I start to get dehydration headaches.

Also do you have any tips I really feel like my jogging is all over the place, one day I can run 15k at an ok pace with a sprint at the end whereas another I get sluggish at 3k mark and my nips hurt and I end up just walking for half of it.

I’ve always used base layer for the nips as I would be absolutely fucked without that. I’ve switched to Under Armour heatgear recently but even the cheapo Sondico stuff from sports direct does the job. Don’t get cotton/ thermal base layer!! :joy:

My strength and conditioning training has been a bit shit since lockdown so I just didn’t have that base to rely on when the legs were starting to give up a bit. Also you definitely get a boost from the supporters on the street. There was about 250k lining the course of Dublin last year.

As regards advice, do you use a watch to pace? I think it’s vital. If I just went out at top speed I wouldn’t even last 3k before being gassed. Also, if you’re suffering from dehydration sounds like you’re not bringing water? Also vital. Ten miles is the absolute max I’d go out without a water bottle.

Plaster for the nips mate. Fabric strip is best and base level if it’s getting cold.

Oh no I never bring a water bottle, I never really think about how much I’m going to run I just go out, put my headphones in and go as long as I want to/can.

I never really time myself either as I only run casually to supplement with my weight lifting. I feel like recording it would subtract from the good vibes I get doing it casually but I still admit that when I do have days where I run 15k+ with no breaks it’s because I’m in great head space yet mindful of my controlled speed.

I heard a while ago that one of the most important things is to start a run slowly, breath in through your nose for the first half k and consciously think about your pace and breathing. Yet every every other time I step out for a jog I go full puppy dog energy and gas myself. It’s definitely a discipline.

I basically do what is in your last paragraph. I am conscious of my pace by looking at my watch 42 times a minute.

@Stroller I use base layer all year round. Plasters didn’t really work for me plus I’m a big girl when it comes to removing a plaster.

As an injured and ageing ex bodybuilder, who’s mental health has put an end to training , I’m in awe of anyone who can run a marathon. Personally I think it’s a phenomenal achievement, even just taking part is an achievement.
Good luck Sham, congratulations on even attempting such a feat .
