Riccardo Calafiori (33)

while we are in an electronic world, there are still a lot of people using the old school method, trust me.

so if they are saying they need time to fax it, I believe it.

De Gea’s deadline day transfer from United to Real fell through due to a broken fax machine if I remember correctly.

Sliding doors moment for his career to be honest.

Well that says it all really doesn’t it!

Not if he’s played out of position

Someone clever (so that rules me out) on an Arsenal podcast suggested that the plan for Calafiori is for him to be the long term replacement for Gabriel but will probably have a season or two of transition.

However, you never know with Arteta we might start the season with White/Saliba/Calafiori/Timber.

I think we’ll see Calafiori play in a few roles this season ultimately as the backup LCB and the first choice LB.

I still do think the long term plan with him is for him to be the LCB. It’s clearly his position and where he is strongest but it’ll be a transitional year or two.

I posted a couple of days ago I read in an Italian newspaper that the reason Calafiori plays LB was that the Basel manager said that he was too slow to play as a wing back. So this got me thinking that he’s gonna replace Gabriel or be utilised in a back 3 or even the Beckenbauer/ Baresi role.
I may be wrong but I don’t think he’s gonna be playing purely as a LB long term.
Anyway as soon as he’s got the shirt on his back we’ll find out.

Gabriel has LCB on absolute lock.

Our best defensive record in 20 years. Crucial piece in that achievement.

Calafiori will have to be remarkably good to oust Gabriel this season. He’ll probably only get chances there when rotation comes into play or injury forces it.

And that’s why, In my opinion, Calafiori will be employed as a center left center back, in my opinion, as Arteta tweaks his tactical system to a back 8 as we enter stage 4 of Arteta’s five year plan.

So against the likes of Heart of Midlothian in the Catcutta Cup, in my opinion, we could see a back line comprising:

Zinchenko LB
Kiwior LLCB
Calafiori CLCB
Gabriel LCB
Saliba RCB
Timber CRCB
Tomigol! RRCB
White RB

In my expert opinion.

Edit: forgot to add MLS, who can play as LLB (after last night’s showing).

Will play inverted left back and immediately be an upgrade on Zinchenko

Feel like there’s no much point shipping him off to the US tour, get him in for the emirates cup games.
