Reiss Nelson (Loan: Fulham)

He’s got a low ceiling. Next.

Ruthless. I have said before that I don’t rate him that highly but I’ll give him a chance with Arteta. If Mikel and Freddie all rate him so highly there must be a reason.

He’s almost certainly never going to amount to more than mid table level at the very best.

At best, he will be as good as Ashley Young

He’ll be lucky to reach Nathan Redmond’s level IMO.

At best I think he will reach CR7 levels.

At worst, maybe 96 R9. But by the sound of things, he isn’t a fraud with bubblegum knees. :xhaka2:

Nah but being serious, there is a lot of underrating here.

Nelson and Saka will make it here, barring any big injuries. Maybe not be huge players, and may be squad options but they will make it.

He probably won’t become a starting caliber player for Arsenal simply because (a) the vast majority top youth players don’t make it and (b) he hasn’t done much to suggest otherwise in his limited first team minutes.

But I think its way too early to write him off given that he just turned 20 last month. Mane was playing in Ligue 2 when he turned 20, Salah was still owned by an Egyptian club, Sterling was having a miserable year that led many people to claim that he’d never have any end product, etc. Final third decision making and end product are often the last skills to develop in these tricky, quick wide forward players. I don’t see Nelson ever being a Mane/Salah/Sterling level world class player, but if he builds those skills over time, like all those players eventually did, he can certainly be a good player at a top club.

@Calum can you post that article?

I honestly have no idea based on what people are saying Nelson has a low ceiling. It’s fair to say he won’t make it for the simple reasons Powderfinger says but in terms of talent he certainly has that, statements about him having a low ceiling are kind of strange. Question really is if he has the personality on the pitch for me, something he hasn’t shown for Arsenal (though did seem to show weirdly enough for Hoffenheim).

All players get a new blank slate with the new manager. Way too much noise to make any judgment whatsoever on young attacking players with a manager as bad as Emery. Just as I reconsider Pepe under Arteta (though he still seems ridiculously raw for a guy who turns 25 this year and we paid £72m for), people should do similarly with Nelson and perhaps realise that at 20 he’s putting in a similar performance level to the 24 year old.

Really think we shouldn’t copy and paste full Athletic articles in here lads. It’s just inviting trouble.

So from now on: Don’t do it.

Coaxing improvement from individuals has been a theme of Arteta’s early coaching career and he has been credited with an important role in the development of, among others, Raheem Sterling. “I wouldn’t like to compare [with Sterling],” he said. “What I will say is that Reiss has the potential to do whatever he wants. If he wants to do it, wants to learn and wants to challenge himself he can be a top, top player for this football club.”

Hmmm, still not convinced.

Good. Because that would be fucking insane.

Why? Sterling’s end product used to be dog shite till City got rolling. Similar cases(obviously Raheem more mobile and better dribbler though).
