Reiss Nelson (Loan: Fulham)

It’s mainly end product, and that was the case for everyone.

They’re not used to having the ball in those situations, so rustiness is expected.

He’ll only get better. May not be world class but there is a potential for a lot more.

As @Midfield_Maestro will attest to, people never rated Gnabry either…

We’re just too impatient in the modern day.

Arteta sees something and that’s good enough for me.

I rated Gnabry, five times more talent than Nelson.

But Nelson isn’t showing any great potential. Gnabry did in spurts. I just had an issue with his injuries and general fitness.

What?
Everyone rated Gnabry

Oh please do shut up, that’s not an incredible fucking gesture.

Why is it an incredible gesture putting your arm around the player FFS.

Yeah @Electrifying put your hands down ffs

Yeah bit weird coaches can’t wait till they get into the dressing room. Haha

Bit of an off day?
Bit rusty not used to actually being given the ball in good positions?
I dunno.
Defo had good work rate but no end product which is what counts. BUT encouraging from him.
Still think pepe should be starting there tho. Nelson seems like hed be suited on loan in the championship atm but I guess we kind of need him atm atleast on the bench considering our squad atm
Was nice to see him getting close with arteta at the end. That gave me a lil poke in the feels.

It’s hardly like any of them have gone on to have top class careers.

Haha mate you’re doing a bit of revisionist history.

Not trying to pick a fight but nothing wrong with being wrong! You can tell me about all the shit I talked about Ramsey in 2012 or 2015-16 or when I thought Chuks Aneke was a prospect or a fuckload other things, no worries

Sterling v 2.0

Not.

Gnabry has tbf.

Ramsey done alright.

Yeah the success rate is low. But these guys haven’t had the correct environment to succeed for the longest time.

There is a lack of patience imo, especially when considering that. I just pray the environment is better now.

WRT Ozil, give him short leash… soon as he falls off the lazy wagon again, toss him out.

He was great tonight, albeit under the optimally gift-wrapped conditions B’mouth gave him.

Even I knew Gnabry was gonna be good. I didn’t see many writing him off, the overwhelmening feeling when we were selling him for 5m was that we were being done.

Your point on environment is of course valid but we are what we are in that sense as are our youth products. They either have the will and or talent to make it despite that or they don’t.

Fair play.

I have faith in Nelson. Even Mbappe struggled under Emery.

He’s not had long under Arteta, and to see those scenes at the end, and for Arteta to start him, he must be showing some good things imo.

Anyways I’m done arguing about him.

It’s kinda boring when people just take a default negative stance on anything coming from our academy just because the odds will always back that kind of stance.

We get it, youth products usually don’t make it, and you’ll be right more than wrong if you take this stance, but it seems to me more interesting to judge each player as a separate case.

So speaking of Nelson’s case, can make all the excuses we like, that he wasn’t physically up to it this season (which is certainly true, he needs more power and explosion in his game to be an interesting winger IMO, unless his decision making and creativity suddenly goes from like level 2 to level 9), but he really needs to do put in some nice performances before the end of the season with Arteta or else I don’t see any good reason why he should be part of our plans for next season. That said, people are hyperbolic on him, overall his performance wasn’t good but there was some decent bits of play and positives.

Also with Saka I was really excited about him after that Europa League game that was class but he’s starting to look like your typical not-so-creative factory line winger which is kinda what I was afraid he was before that game and I decided to believe he was Leroycito. But won’t judge him much while he’s playing LB.

He did the basics wrong which is the real worry.

As far as our youth goes I think Martinelli makes it and is quality, Saka potentially and Guen makes it but as a squad player or top quality player remains to be seen pending on if he can fix his deficiencies.

All the others sadly I don’t think have what it takes, unless we’re content with being a mid table type club, then I can see Nelson, ESR and Willock continuing to be squad players.

First half his decision-making and final ball was extremely disappointing.

Second half he showed a lot more of the bright, athletic and gifted talent we saw from the youth team years.

Overall I’m glad he got the minutes he did. We need to invest in our young players to sustain our progress going forward. All over the Premier League young players are getting their break.

I’m confident Arteta is the right man to nurture a talent like Nelson and help him realise whatever potential he has.
