We nearly won a title in 2022-23 conceding 43 goals. What are you even saying.
And how much did we score?
We had 40+ GD to make up for poor defence.
That 99/00 table has low scoring on top of high goal conceded
Yeah, you had more quality spread across the league, not just 2-3 dominant/untouchable teams you have been seeing for more than 10 years now.
Btw it’s interesting to see who were the top goalscorers.
Salva Ballesta with 27 goals playing for Racing Santander, followed by Catanha and Hasselbaink with 24 goals playing for Malaga and Atletico (Hasselbaink scored all their goals that year ).
Very different compared to these days where the top teams have to have the most dominant goalscorers and players. As said, you had the players of high quality in the mediocre teams that could make the difference and make life difficult for the top teams. That is what made everything interesting.
Trion. Please review what you just said.
To have a league score a lot you need a league to concede a lot.
No, I believe quality teams score much more than they concede.
Real Madrid with +10 GD says it all.
Those teams are all equally shit rather than equally high in quality.
haha. No wonder they got relegated.
Quality.
As @Pires said, talent was more spread back then, do you think that’s disputable? Or are you doubling down on players being generally shit?
Hasselbaink was playing for Atletico that season that got relegated. He would join Chelsea right after and put up back to back 20+ goal seasons.
talent may have been spread but that doesn’t equate quality football.
If that table equates quality football then Polish football is world class
I was talking about Atletico being not quality
But the table says 48 scored for Atletico
Right so we’re going to ignore how strong these teams were in Europe then. The CL final was contested by 2 Spanish teams. The CL Semi had three Spanish teams.
They didn’t do that well in the UEFA Cup, but it was a pretty difficult competition to win back then (Pure knockout format). Deportivo came up against Arsenal and Celta Vigo against Juventus (who they beat before losing to Lens)
Since I didn’t watch these clubs, I will take your word for it.
I just find it difficult that quality clubs are unable to score goals and at the same time unable to defend goals.
I was joking.
Tbf, scoring literally half of their league goals is still a lot.
You’re not wrong here actually but I definitely know stacking the deck doesn’t either. Guardiola’s football was painful to watch half the time and look how City squads were disproportionate to everyone else.
That season is an outlier, that’s why it’s fascinating. I wouldn’t focus too much on it.
Lol given their struggles this season with one guy injured. One must wonder how good all those guys really are sometimes.
Djalminha
Let me try to explain. When Herbert Chapman -under the influence of Charles Buchan-astutely introduced the defensive centre-half, or third-back game, to Highbury at the end of the 1920s it enabled Arsenal completely to dominate the English game through the 1930s. Every other club in the land fell into the trap. They copied the plan slavishly but because they did not possess the required key players to make it work they found themselves playing second fiddle to the giants of Arsenal.
Football is such a cyclical phenomenon. Haha
Edit - Love Google lens.
Incredible, isn’t it?
