Pep Guardiola

I still prefer Fergie. Guardiola is second though

And tbf, he has done it without copious amounts of money. At Aberdeen.

In the fashion that he did too.

Always setting the standard others follow with his continuous reinvention and an always attractive and dominant style of play.

This debate is as pointless and boring as Messi/Ronaldo.

There is an obvious right answer and those who don’t want to admit it just draw arbitrary lines in the sand to go against it.

Football was different then though. The game has changed so much. You get exceptions to the rule but the money is largely concentrated amongst a very small amount of clubs and they all spend billions ever years improving their squads.

United spend as much as City and Chelsea spent over half a billion. PSG spent £400m on Neymar and Mbappe alone. The game has gone.

You can only judge someone by what they achieve in their respective eras. I think Fergie is the greatest but I think Pep’s success is too often downplayed and attributed to money when it’s just too simplistic a way to look at it.

Tactically he is so far ahead of the rest of the pack. He’s managed to continue evolving and maintaining a ridiculously high standard for the last 15 years and that’s not easy. He’s dominated the PL in a way only Fergie ever did.

Guardiola is the best manager of all time imo. This isn’t even a contest.

The style of play alone is leagues above everyone else.

I call him a bald fraud out of jest and disdain, but he’d best all the greatest club teams with this Man City or his previous Barca teams.

Even with no money, I’m convinced he’d be able to do multiple ā€˜Leicesters’

I think it’s probably just still an ā€œacuteā€ pain for a lot of us. To see us lose out on the league and then see another team do a treble while we’ve been contesting…man, it’s hard. Not as hard as 99, but this is a bitter pill to swallow.

There is the money factor within it, however, and it can’t be ignored. Man City’s bench is amazing.

A more interesting question might be- if we had Pep instead of Arteta from January onwards, would he have won us the league?

(Probably just as ā€œpie in the skyā€ a question as the ā€œwho’s the greatest manager ever?ā€ tbf)

Can the Saudi’s please offer him a fortune to go manage over there.

Fuck Pep. Fuck City. Fuck Football.

I wonder who they’re lining up to replace him and if he’ll leave us to join them.

That would pretty much put the seal on the PL’s transformation into a glorified Bundesliga.

Why you would choose to not take in context when making your opinion on the best manager will never make sense to me though. Also not discussing it, on a football forum, in summer  I mean this is what we do.

He is clearly good imo, one of the best probably… but do I personally think a dozen managers could take a team that had just won the PL a year ago, spend unparalleled amounts of money to keep winning the league when no other team has that same advantage?

Yes, I do, in fact I’m convinced, look at Klopp who beat him even with that disadvantage, and won the CL before he did, with that disadvantage. Do I think that if you gave Klopp Man City and Ā£1bn or w/e it is, and gave Pep Liverpool and a quarter of that, that Klopp would win the league 5 times and probably the CL more than once? yes I do.

It is ofc also speculation, we will never know and that is my main argument, not that I know that he is not the best, just that we can’t know and I think the difference in conditions is so severe and significant they need to be considered.

And you can still prefer Pep’s style, I don’t mind, you can choose other metrics, Zidane won 3 CLs in 4 years or w/e it was, I don’t mind. I just don’t agree you can just say ā€œwon most, is bestā€ without context.

I mean we use context in other areas why not here. I don’t hear anyone say Kim Jong Un is definitely the best choice for great leader, he got 100% of the votes, no point in arguing why that is, just accept that he is the best and stop overthinking peeps.

One thing I did realise however, is that, say City were found guilty and they decide (Serie A style, which probably won’t happen but for shits and giggles) to strip them of their titles and you just put #2 as the league winner… we will get this years PL trophy  I think it is super unfair for a myriad of reasons…but at least we get something

Pep about to get whoever is Spain’s coach in 2025 fired.

9 years at one club will have been a dynasty.

If he wins another 2 league titles he’d be sitting at 7 in 9 years which is frankly ridiculous.

Outclassed twice in 2 CL finals against Pep. Outclassed and destroyed.
He himself admitted that he has never seen anything like the football Pep produced against him in the 2 CL finals.
