Oppenheimer

Great bit of cinema indeed. Scientists funnily taking bets on if the bomb might destroy the world was absolutely insane haha. Also loved the dialogue between Groves and Oppenheimer while they were waiting. ā€œChances are near zero.ā€ Hilarious and scary at the same time. The moment of explosion was very well done too, fully focussed on Oppenheimer and his breathing.

Let’s see if this film is able to inspire the next generation of youngsters to become scientists

Only if they can put it on the gram.

Thought it’s overrated

Was it depressing at all? I thought I would have been interested in this because the cast looked amazing but the more I thought about it, it just made me terrified knowing that the US killed thousands upon thousands of civilians with the bomb. IDK. If I’m gonna pony up for a babysitter, tickets, some vegan candy and etc., I’d rather have fun than be depressed.

the bomb was to stop the war; otherwise more will be killed.

Not at all. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable three hours.

As Ronnie said. Someone was going to get it first. Glad it was America.

After some time to dream about this film and think about it some more, my conclusion is that it’s a great film. Easily 10 out of 10.

Of course some people left the cinema prematurely because they expected an action packed fast food movie.

This is not that. This is what cinema is supposed to be.

Didn’t feel like a drag at all and I really hope Murphy wins an Oscar for his performance which was sublime.

Hmmm I kinda wanna go against the grain here. Watched it today, but I’ll let others watch it before giving what’ll appear to be a damning review.

Overall 6/10

Write it as a spoiler. Curious to read opposite opinion on this film.

Can you expand on that? I’m really 50-50 on seeing it but I don’t necessarily want a six hour slog about humanity’s hubris and how dangerous nuclear weapons are.

The real question is whether it inspired you to become scientist.

I saw Barbie with my daughter today. That was a true cinematic experience :joy:

There’s much to be said about Oppenheimer, a biopic of the man should be fitting. Nolan’s staple of switching timelines in-film doesn’t really do it justice. Especially when the subject matter is there, it can’t be toyed with.

I suppose it’s not really a cinema film, either. There was one explosion in the whole film. Definitely a film to watch at home. Dialogue is very quick, too. Maybe allow some time to rewind and possibly add subtitles so you don’t miss something lol.

And the sex- not very Nolan-like. Was it absolutely necessary? Especially in that weird tribunal context.

I think if the subject matter wasn’t there, we’d have got an even crazier film. Like Tenet. Nolan would have used his creative licence to its fullest (and weirdest) effect.

A long film, building up to a crescendo that is a bit ā€œmehā€, all-in-all.

And where was Michael Caine?!

Having said all that, Cillian Murphy is the saving grace here. Acts this superbly. He’s not even trying for an Oscar here, but just acts so well. Broken, defeated, torn, without even shedding a tear. Murphy is the saving grace of this film.

I genuinely think a well-made documentary on Oppenheimer would have been just the ticket instead.

I’ve only heard good things about it, except for that video doing the rounds of Ben Shapiro losing his marbles and lighting a doll on fire.

Looks nailed on at the moment. Leo DiCaprio is his closest rival for it, so odds may change when Killers of the Flower Moon is released.

I can imagine right wing nutcases getting agitated by it, but it was a lot better than I thought it would be and I think most people would get at least some enjoyment out of it. Mattel were a big part of making the film and I was surprised how much they were willing to allow criticism of themselves. Mostly played for laughs, but still.

Margot Robbie smashed her role out of the park too, which was a huge reason the film works. My daughter was very happy with it.

I was really impressed by the acting of the entire cast. Especially Murphy did a fantastic job I think in portraying Oppenheimer. If you’re into great acting, go watch it.

I also liked the pacing of the movie. It is building up towards… well you kinda can guess it but I don’t want to write it as to not spoil it in case you didn’t guess it.

From a cinematography point of view. It’s just beautifully shot. The different time lines shown in different ways which separate the time lines cinematographically very well.

Ultimately, if it’s for you. I don’t know. Depends on whether you go to watch movies in a cinema to enjoy fast paced, action packed (superhero) stuff. Or if you can appreciate a movie made around a bit more substance. It’s not art house and it’s not fast food superhero. It’s somewhere in between and I think Nolan did a great job here and it’s now my favourite Nolan film.

Clearly, Elon Musk and Sam Altman don’t know what they’re talking about. After having seen this film last night, I quit my work and gone straight back to academia to catch up on the dark arts of quantum physics. Who wouldn’t want to hang out around the Einstein’s of this world and have exciting affairs with female communist party members.

I suppose it depends on what one expects from a movie. I think it was refreshing that there was only one explosion to which the film was building towards. I thought it was also cleaverly done not to show documentary footage of the actual bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Because we all kind of have seen these images and can imagine what they look like.

It was playful instead of a dull recitation of facts which I’d say a documentary would be like about Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project. That we got to see it through the eyes of Oppenheimer is refreshing too, instead of a more general perspective.

All in all, I can’t say I don’t understand if people are perhaps disappointed with the movie. There is always room for that depending on someone’s expectations and idea of a good time at the movies.

For me, I was indulging in this 3 hour Hollywood biopic of Oppenheimer and enjoyed every moment of it.

Seen it today. It was fine. Doubt I’d watch it again tbh. The cinematography was obviously incredible but that’s not really what cinema is about for me. The amount of unnecessary noise too was annoying. That scene at the start and the build up to the blast especially.
