Thats where you are wrong though he wasnt an unknown hence why the club got massive kudos for getting him because a lot of other clubs were after him. The guy has better stats than hazard ever got when the league is harder than it was ehen hazard is playing! If it was hazard we got you eould be over the moon but this guy has better tallies than he ever got. He was the best last season barring messi for goals and assists and you are talking about him like he was a nothing player give him a chance before you start getting down on him!
Yeah cos we broke our transfer record for him, we are known to be tight in the market usually, we had a reported 45m budget, and he scored 22 goals and got 11 assists in one of the top sides in France (in terms of table performance).
What do you expect people to do? lol Fans of all clubs do the same shit.
@DavidHillier this guy was Liverpools main transfer target in the summer, nowadays they only go for the best
The thing is with Pepe he bears the burden of his price tag. If he only cost 40m then people probably wouldn’t care right now and say let’s judge him by a 90 min performance. But at 80m you would subconsciously expect him to do something amazing when he came on, which he didn’t today. Hence the early question mark.
Now for comparison, at a similar cost people expect the same for Harry Maguire and he did deliver a motm performance today. Similar for VVD last season as well. All three players were considered overpriced at the time they were bought. One has delivered exceptionally. The other appeared very promising. But our guy hasn’t.
I guess what I want to say is that we need to lower our expectation for Pepe because not every player in the 80m range will eventually become a VVD success. Hell I don’t even think he will outperform Aubameyang who went for cheaper.
why does he need to outperform auba, he is not a striker…i reckon he will be a successful player just give him time to bed in.
He doesn’t. I just have the feeling some people think Pepe is gonna be a superstar. Personally I think he will be a success, but there’s much less chance of a superstar (like winning the MVP like Hazard) though.
why are people actually judging him after 10 minutes
People should be happy both he and Ceballos got a PL reality check early on. Keeps both of them on their toes and if they got the right mentality it should drive them even more to improve.
Because ten minutes is enough time to extrapolate all his advanced metric stats and know FOR A FACT that he sucks, Iwobi should have stayed and we should have signed a good solid lad like Ryan Fraser instead.
He’s just a skinny poor man’s jay emmanuel thomas tbf.
This is true
The match was completely dead before he came on. Would have been good if he livened it up a bit but it’s his debut and we weren’t even really focused on attacking on his side today.
Anyone worrying after today is a numpty. Anyone saying it’s not a sure thing could well be right but hopefully not.
I’m more than happy with a few lowkey 10, then 20, then 30 min cameos etc. while he gets used to the bigger stage. Especially if we’re winning regardless
The guy Lille bought to replace Pépé scored twice today… maybe we should have skipped the established and gone for the newbie instead
Just kidding. I’m not even counting today for Pépé.
Not one person in this thread questioned Pepe performance today as being a decisive factor in his future here. Ease up people its all good.
I honestly thought the posts critical of him today were sarcastic, playing on the habit of fans of drawing stupid conclusions from tiny bits of evidence. Turns out such satire would be well justified.
I want to see him starting next game.
Time to run riot at home.
You just know Pepe is gonna deliver at some point, can’t wait when this happens gonna be fire
!!!
Jesus some judging already after no pre season and a 20 minute cameo
After a slightly nervous start I thought he started to look very good.
I am looking forward to seeing him play more.
Thierry Henry looked dodgy in his first few weeks with us. I remember seeing him when I went to our away game at Southampton in his first season and he looked like he couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo at first.
But then he found his range and became one of the top players in the world and arguably the best player we ever had in the modern era.
I think thumbs up for Pepe
