That isn’t the mindset of people who actively try to destroy artefacts of the past - they just want to be able to think they’ve “fixed” history for themselves
Which statues have been destroyed? Because I haven’t seen anyone say in this thread that this is a good thing to do.
I’m talking about statues in public, because I thought that’s what you were talking about. I’m evidently not talking about artefacts in libraries or museums, which is clearly distinct from statues out in public on streets and in squares etc.
Do you contest my point about statues being erected to celebrate the people they depict rather than them being erected as a method of preserving history?
Not sure if it is still the case, but there used to be a Hitler in Madame Tussauds
Jakey and Sham being incredibly obtuse in this thread
There are all sorts of statues and buildings celebrating people from history that have done something that would be considered wrong in this society.
There was talk of ripping down statues of Churchill recently but why stop there?
Nearly everyone with money a couple of hundred years ago had slaves so does that mean we have to get rid of anything connected to those people, who included royalty, presidents and leaders?
Where does it stop?
No, they wouldn’t allow Hitler so they chose Thatcher instead, who was the next best thing.
I think it’s the other way around and I’m astonished at some of the replies I’ve read in this topic
I don’t particularly support removing statues or artefacts (except for those that need to be returned to their countries - so pretty much the whole of the British museum at all. Putting them into museums is just the obvious compromise to avoid them being destroyed entirely.
The only difference between this thread and some others in current affairs is that this one has 6 mhppys instead of the usual 2.
Worth pointing out before we go further that you’re the only one name calling.
What name have I called anyone?
I don’t understand how you guys can dismiss the idea that it is difficult to provide evidence of (or quantify) the opportunities lost by celebrities.
Considering the way you are replying, I rather interact with mhappy.
Literally labelling multiple users with a name you link with negative connotations.
They know but as long as you say provide evidence to something you can’t then they can claim victory. It’s just a way of shutting the conversation down.
Im actually with you on that. I was surprised by you explaining your point multiple times this morning and just being brick walled about it.
There are plenty of very misguided folks who venerate Confederate generals as some sort of heroes fighting for self-determination rather than greedy dickheads fighting to maintain the institution of slavery.
By that time slavery was not cost effective
There are. Do you censor your history just to deal with idiots like that though?
