We never question the so-called ‘decent source’ whether they have evidence of what they have written. We just consider them ‘decent source’ based on their previous performance. and that is inference.
Wikipedia actually sums up cancel culture pretty well:
‘Cancel culture, also known as call-out culture, is a phrase contemporary to the late 2010s and early 2020s used to refer to a culture in which those who are deemed to have acted or spoken in an unacceptable manner are ostracized, boycotted or shunned.’
Basically it’s what is outside the overton window + the consequences which will vary depending on the who and the what. JK Rowlings comments can easily be an example; speaking out for Palestine could be another. And I doubt that cancel culture is new to our time. It might feel new to us though.
I think in general there is an idea in western societies that a lot of the ideas and issues we grapple with are new to our time, gender identity, accepting differing sexualities, abhorrence of racism etc and that progress means we are more advanced in our attitudes that societies of the past, which both is and isn’t true.

I like this statement. It’s like obviously we have progressed as we don’t have Empire and slavery anymore and even most racist types would likely agree somewhat with that, but also we tend to forget that we freely chose to end slavery of our own volition and spend a fortune enforcing that overseas.

Good call. I had this history professor at UCL who went on and on about how the Roman Empire was just the USA. Anyone could become Roman, you just had to swear loyalty to Rome just like anyone could travel to America and disappear into the fabric of American society.
There really is nothing new under the sun.
What are these overly sensitive parents complaining about?
If a teacher can’t go to school and stand in front of a class of children in a wig, wearing a tight shirt showing her Z-cup breasts with protruding nipples, what can she do?
